The best way to be safe is to leave it - or if you are worried, get in touch with the companies (not using the details provided) and double-check that everything is okay.

I live in the UK and received similar letter from Cadwalader. I contacted them to find out where they had received my personal data from as I had no knowledge of them. They have emailed me to say it relates to an old Bradford & Bingley mortgage. Therefore, other clients of B&B may also have had their data hacked. Not a scam.
Well if this is true it could be where my info is from too? My letter was in my maiden name, I married 11 years ago, my husband also got a letter the same day.

We were with Mortgage Express which was taken over by Bradford and Bingley, we remortgaged about 4/5 years ago actually B&B was still in my maiden name as I needed to provide my marriage certificate for the remortgage. Makes sense if true why it came in my Christian name.

A week on, are we any further forward if this really is legit/scam?

All need to follow this case - patrick perotti has filed a case against the company which will effect all.

This is not a scam. Rest easy everybody.
    ^Poor advice.

People should always be wary about the possibility of being scammed.

Just because one person has a letter which turns out to be legit, doesn't mean that everyone reciving a similar letter will also be in the same position.

It is a well known tactic of scammers to use situations like this to prey on the vulnerable.  It is an easy way to get past someone's natural defensiveness to make them think they are part of a group and if it is Ok for one then it must be Ok for all.  No.  It is still important to check and check again.

Anyone getting a similar letter needs to make sure the contact details are exactly the same, or else do their own research.

Nothing online about any B&B data breeches. But they did cease to exist in 2010, as sold to  Abbey National Who were taken over by Santander.
Although the name does still live on, currently with
    Davidson Kempner Capital Management LP.

Just go into this with your eyes wide open & be prepared to back out if too much info is required.

In reality I would want proof of exactly when this happened before even parting with any details. So you can check that it is what it says it is.

    Hi all

I got one of these letters too and was immediately suspicious. I contacted the London office of Cadwalader and the original letter's signatory, (Removed by Forum Team) called me back and left a voicemail (I was in a meeting). I have since emailed to check I was a client and am awaiting a response. From previous comments on here it looks like we were all clients of their clients (financial institutions).

You may be interested that (Removed by Forum Team) in the US has filed a Class Action Suit against CADWALADER, WICKERSHAM & TAFT LLP. (Apparently I can't paste a link as a newbie on here, but Google and you will find a website entitled ClassAction[dot]org)

If you dig further into this website it provides information on class action suits. Basically, everyone this has affected (that's us) is entitled to compensation IF Patrick Perotti wins. Apparently we would be notified on how to claim our settlement, in that instance.

    An interesting turn of events!
How would this effect us in UK though if this case wins? The case is in US?

This old article confirms a link to Bradford and Bingley

    https://www.cadwalader.com/news/news-release/cadwalader-nominated-for-eight-2018-iflr-european-awards

Note this is nothing to do with Abbey National or Santander - they only acquired the savings business and branches, the mortgage business was nationalised like Northern Rock (and I believe ended up with NRAM - Northern Rock Asset Management).

Cadealader are also listed as an advisor to this transaction: https://www.iflr1000.com/Deal/Profile/17626?SEOtitle=Barclays-Bank-investor-group-5-3-billion-acquisition-of-Bradford-and-Bingley-mor#undefined

Thanks. Well we definitely have had a connection with Mortgage Express then Bradford & Bingley when they took over. It points to this for me, but I just don't understand how a leak from a mortgage company in UK has links to an LLP and a court case in USA - and our info shared with anyone!

The more I think of this now the more scary it is.

    The first link says
    • Bradford & Bingley and Mortgage Express buy-to-let mortgage securitization (Ripon Mortgages Plc). Cadwalader acted as English and New York law counsel in the acquisition and securitization of a portfolio of UK buy-to-let mortgages
If they advised on the securitisation, they would have had details of the underlying mortgages (the properties and the borrowers). They'll have stored these details which may have been included in the data that was stolen. I don't think copies of physical ID would be provided as part of this type of transaction, but I it would have included personal details related to the borrower.

Thanks. I have taken the email from the London office to enquire what our letters relate to, as it doesn't say where from and what details of ours have been shared.
I am pretty clueless with the active case in US, I have read and seen it, how would this effect us in the UK? Surely different laws? Any help would be grateful. Thanks
