Scam?

  • I live in the UK and received similar letter from Cadwalader. I contacted them to find out where they had received my personal data from as I had no knowledge of them. They have emailed me to say it relates to an old Bradford & Bingley mortgage. Therefore, other clients of B&B may also have had their data hacked. Not a scam.

    Hi all

I got one of these letters too and was immediately suspicious. I contacted the London office of Cadwalader and the original letter's signatory, (Removed by Forum Team) called me back and left a voicemail (I was in a meeting). I have since emailed to check I was a client and am awaiting a response. From previous comments on here it looks like we were all clients of their clients (financial institutions).

You may be interested that (Removed by Forum Team) in the US has filed a Class Action Suit against CADWALADER, WICKERSHAM & TAFT LLP. (Apparently I can't paste a link as a newbie on here, but Google and you will find a website entitled ClassAction[dot]org)

If you dig further into this website it provides information on class action suits. Basically, everyone this has affected (that's us) is entitled to compensation IF Patrick Perotti wins. Apparently we would be notified on how to claim our settlement, in that instance.

    An interesting turn of events!

Did you use a 3rd party company for a PPI claim?

  • I think this whole thing is an elaborate scam - the quoted 0800 046 5453 telephone number is operated by Magrathea Telecommunications Limited and has been identified as a scam number ! Having received said letter myself yesterday and reading the comments on here I foolishly phoned 0800 046 5453 and managed to get through the fist time only to have the call dropped abruptly before the "scammer" took my details. Tried calling again a few time only to have the call dropped again before anyone answered. All the hall marks of a scam!
I now don't believe any of the comments posted here - the mods should be checking this thread carefully !
I fully expect my mobile to be receiving scam calls etc in the coming weeks !
    Don't fall for this!

No, it isn’t. Read mine and other peoples genuine information.

the number you have quoted is not the helpline number for Cadwalader. You must be referring to something else which may well be an unrelated scam.

Mods - please contact me if you have any queries and gussie5555 get your facts straight before giving misleading information.

Any chance of a look at that letter? Redact any personal information if you can.

The genuine letter about an actual large data hack and countermeasures has now been in circulation for some time, and other details are available online.

Could we be seeing the first attempts of scammers trying to piggyback onto genuine information? It's a fairly well-known method of baiting a trap. The 0800 number quoted is clearly not that seen by earlier posters.

Where are you getting the quoted number from? Who identified it as a scam number? Sometimes numbers get 'reported as scammers' when people don't understand what's happening. Yes, the number COULD be a scam, but not necessarily.

As above - it would be helpful to others if you could post the letter you've received minus your personal info.

The evidence from various posters so far indicate that this isn't a scam.

OK there are two 0800 numbers given in the letter
0800 208 1071 is the london office of Cadwalader on page 2 of the letter
0800 046 5453 is the support number for Kroll on page 3 of the letter

I rang the second number 0800 046 5453 and what sounded like a scammer answered the phone after I chose the Kroll Cadwalader support line option - the line was cut off abruptly before I could continue the conversation - two more calls I made never got through past the "please wait stuff". I then googled this number 0800 046 5453 only to find out that it is operated by Magrathea Telecommunications Limited  and there are several reported instances of scam callers.

This afternoon I called the other number 0800 208 1071 which was answered by a posh voice identifiying themseleves as Cadwalader. The guy seemed genuine and took my number and said someone will get back to me within 48 hours advising me as to what data has been compromised in my case - he did not have access to this information himself.

So I guess Cadwallader are genuine BUT the Kroll side of this looks dodgy - I believe If you register with them you have to supply personal info - which I wont !

Call 0800 046 5453 yourself and see what you think !

    Thank you Gussie555

i was wary of Kroll too. The “scams” quoted as relating to this number (0800 046 5453) on “who-called.co.uk” appear to be all Cadwalader letter recipients who may be wary because, like me, they had no obvious known connection with Cadwalader. But the number probably isn’t a scam?
Kroll are not a scam, are well known with security and investigations but I’m cautious about giving any personal data - they only have limited information to identify me but I’m not giving bank details etc. If you use the “activate monitoring services” provided in the letter you can choose what, if any, information to give them. I tried the number, which says it is Kroll but the offices were closed.
See what Cadwalader tell you in 48 hours and whether or not it does relate to you. You could then contact that previous connection?
Have secure passwords on everything, check you accounts regularly and also the credit agencies like Experian etc if you have access.
    Stay safe.
  • This is not a scam. Rest easy everybody.
