Why are people so disparaging about IHDs?

Smart meters were never designed with any particular tariff in mind. Each smart meter is 4 meters in one: that is, 4 registers with no convention as to which registers should be used for billing. Each register has a 48 by 30 minute daily usage block. It follows that a supplier could choose to bill an E7 tariff on two registers or it could just use a single register and bill on 30 minute usage as is the case with Octopus’ time-of-use tariffs. You can see the tariff rates in the second column; consumption in the third and cost in the fourth. Meter index readings are as my granddaughter would say ‘so yesterday - Grandad.’Swipe said:
Yes, that is really annoying. It means I still have to go out in the rain to get day and night readings.dealyboy said:The only thing I might be critical of is that it doesn't fully understand economy 7, it shows me the day rate during the day period and the night rate during the night period but doesn't separate out the two readings, rather giving a total of the two added together ... but then again it's only young

To read the water meter in awkward place i use a USB Endoscope Borescope (ebay link) for android phone. Phone has to be compatable though and have somehing called OTG in it.
Nice gadget , has light on end of it.1 -
The only thing I originally found useful was when it lit up red when a heavy use item was on....but in reality that's kinda common sense. Then the thing stopped working after less than a year so I dumped it. I have both Bright and Loop apps now which are just better for retrieving info1

What sort of delay are you getting with the Bright and Loop apps?MuckChucker said:The only thing I originally found useful was when it lit up red when a heavy use item was on....but in reality that's kinda common sense. Oh I don't check a whole lot, mostly end of the month at this stage but I'd say Bright is a following day update, which is fine as I know our usage so its just for updating my spreadsheet. I think Loop is more frequent but its not as clear so I don't actually use it as much.RG2015 said:

Bright has a daily refresh but it can be refreshed manually: more frequent data is available if Bright is connected to Hildebrand’s IHD/CAD. Loop, I now understand, refreshes 3 times a day.MuckChucker said:

After 7 months, IHD not quite so entertaining, but a useful alert when freezer door not fully closed😳1

our new(ish) FF beeps if it's been left open, which happens a surprising amount, I can only speculate what kind of money people were costing me on the old non-beeping horribly ice-laden monster!badger09 said:After 7 months, IHD not quite so entertaining, but a useful alert when freezer door not fully closed😳0 -
Well, after nearly 2 weeks on the default tariff and no change to our Eon (Chameleon) IHD, I tried a reboot, by turning it off and then taking it to the meter cabinet and switching it back on. I also left it in the cabinet for about 15 mins.
Came back and....no change ☹️
Maybe it needs overnight? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
Check the meter sub-menus to see if the correct tariff information has been set in the meters by the supplier. The IHD only reads what is stored in the meters. Turning the IHD on and off is not going to result in a tariff update.Sea_Shell said:Well, after nearly 2 weeks on the default tariff and no change to our Eon (Chameleon) IHD, I tried a reboot, by turning it off and then taking it to the meter cabinet and switching it back on.
