how long does it take to charge a car?
General rule 0-80% charge in around 30-45 minutes on a Rapid charger but longer at home on a proper charge point (my economy 7 hours are plenty though) and all day on a 13A domestic supply.
As nobody runs their car to 0 miles range, it could be significantly less unless you wait until 100% charged because at the upper end charge rates slow to protect the battery.

I like my electric car, but I'd not claim that they'll suit everyone or that the charging infrastructure anything like good enough.

thanks - this makes sense now, couldn't work out how people charged up en route somewhere- they must use the rapid charge for that. Thought it all took a lot longer (sounds like it does if done at home)

You can't park your car even in supermarkets for the 6 - 7 hours that some people report are required to fully charge a vehicle so that's not an option
Obviously it depends on the power of the charger you're using - but in any event, you don't need to do a full charge every time (and even if you want to charge to 100%, it's only going to be a full charge if you're almost flat when you arrive at the charger).

My neighbour drives his to the local leisure centre 3 minutes away charges his car there He has everything he needs in his garage but said it’s cheaper to use the leisure centre 🤷‍♀️
He walks back then and collects it later on

Not all cars can use the really rapid chargers, we were earlyish adopters started off almost 8 years ago. We had a leaf, a Tesla and now a Niro , the Tesla was amazing, it planned the routes and where to charge, a 20-30 minute rapid charge and off you went. The other 2 take literally hours to do the same thing.

We haven’t had a home charger however we have moved from an area where there were lots of chargers, many free. our Sunday routine was drive to the nearest free charger, walk home, walk back 7 hours later to a almost full charge and drive home. Now we are struggling to find places to charge that don’t also charge for parking!

We parked at the local Tesco and for the 2 hours of free parking available we got about 40 miles range added which costs us about £4.40 in charging.

Having a home charger is now becoming more likely, we do have off-road parking so can plug in to our garage plug socket if needed. However even that isn’t cheap unless you have an EV tariff or solar panels.

Unlikely. Hydrogen is inherently a lot less energy efficient than a battery EV due to the energy lost in producing the hydrogen then in the fuel cell itself turning it back to electricity.

It has advantages in energy density that means it will probably find use in things like long distance haulage, but it would be a retrograde step for the majority of users when comparing to even current battery EV technology.

Surely most people will get accustomed to building a charging session into their routine somehow?  It wouldn't even be the most significant change to my lifestyle if we switched over now, considering everything else that's changed since the pandemic.  My colleague who has an EV says the only time she and her husband have to even think about when and where to charge is when they go on holiday somewhere that's just beyond their range.  So they pre-plan lunch somewhere they can charge en route.

Yes, must admit that (when I get an EV) I'd be more concerned about scheduling stops in long journeys, and whether the anticipated chargers are actually available and working. Not so much of a problem if you're in the middle of a big urban area (and if it doesn't really matter whether you charge up today or tomorrow), more of an issue if you're out in the sticks and need to continue your joruney.
