Will it become a requirement to have EV charging points on new houses?

As nobody runs their car to 0 miles range, it could be significantly less unless you wait until 100% charged because at the upper end charge rates slow to protect the battery.
I like my electric car, but I'd not claim that they'll suit everyone or that the charging infrastructure anything like good enough.Decluttering awards 2025: 🏅🏅⭐️ ⭐️, DH: ⭐️ and one for Mum: 🏅2 -

You can't park your car even in supermarkets for the 6 - 7 hours that some people report are required to fully charge a vehicle so that's not an option0 -
My neighbour drives his to the local leisure centre 3 minutes away charges his car there He has everything he needs in his garage but said it’s cheaper to use the leisure centre 🤷♀️He walks back then and collects it later on0

Not all cars can use the really rapid chargers, we were earlyish adopters started off almost 8 years ago. We had a leaf, a Tesla and now a Niro , the Tesla was amazing, it planned the routes and where to charge, a 20-30 minute rapid charge and off you went. The other 2 take literally hours to do the same thing.
We haven’t had a home charger however we have moved from an area where there were lots of chargers, many free. our Sunday routine was drive to the nearest free charger, walk home, walk back 7 hours later to a almost full charge and drive home. Now we are struggling to find places to charge that don’t also charge for parking!
We parked at the local Tesco and for the 2 hours of free parking available we got about 40 miles range added which costs us about £4.40 in charging.
Having a home charger is now becoming more likely, we do have off-road parking so can plug in to our garage plug socket if needed. However even that isn’t cheap unless you have an EV tariff or solar panels.1 -

It has advantages in energy density that means it will probably find use in things like long distance haulage, but it would be a retrograde step for the majority of users when comparing to even current battery EV technology.0 -
Surely most people will get accustomed to building a charging session into their routine somehow? It wouldn't even be the most significant change to my lifestyle if we switched over now, considering everything else that's changed since the pandemic. My colleague who has an EV says the only time she and her husband have to even think about when and where to charge is when they go on holiday somewhere that's just beyond their range. So they pre-plan lunch somewhere they can charge en route.Fashion on the Ration
