Good to hear you have settled on an ICE

My son a driver of special delivery car transporter to Europe sent me this photo.

    My choice?

A Skoda Superb 1.6 Estate, as big as a barge, 65mpg and £30 a year road tax, drove mine from Calais to Roses in Spain on 1 tank of diesel,  750 miles...

The Passat Business and Skoda Octavia i had showed 70mpg on 250 mile trips but never did Spain in them
    Read with much interest.
I'm in the market for a replacement car.
Budget up to about £15k though there seems to be surprisingly little difference between £4k & £15k  ... younger cars but still with high mileage. Or older cars.
The ones I like are V70, Superb Estate or maybe Octavia Estate. I really don't drive that much, don't tow, most driving would be 140 mile round trip a few times a year, a few longer drives on holiday. Not much short local driving, I walk most places.  I maybe do less than £5k a year. Not averse to a petrol either.
My pet local garage is a chap who's knowledge and opinion I trust. He says he'd likely go with a 2.0L Diesel VAG, the 140 engine. Reliable and solid.  There can be a few issues with TSi. Obvs not all but he deals with a few.
So, interested in your comments on the 1.6.
I do really like the Superb Estate.
Not sure whether I'd be better to go for an older cheaper one, or stump up and get a younger one. There a lot out there with near intergalactic mileages which bodes well.

That looks scary.  Locally, an EV went up in flames at the weekend.  It’d be interesting to see if it’s a higher rate than ICE vehicles do.

Obviously numbers will vary from one study to another, but BEV's are far less likely to catch fire than an ICE (10 to 100 times less likley), but hybrids seem to have a higher chance than an ICE, possibly 2x more.

The pic gave me deja vu, and I remembered a similar pic, perhaps 5yrs ago, also in the UK, with a load of burning LR's, because the transporter truck had caught fire.

Don't want to pick on LR, but they had a lot of issues regarding fires a year or so back, including their ICEV's. I think recent recalls though were tiny, affecting very few vehicles.
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

I've currently seen an 03 plate Golf on the local garage forecourt but no price in the window as yet.  Surprisingly, it seems to be ULEZ compliant.  I might see what that is up for and go bangernomics again.

I've also seen a private sale XE but the advert is dated August 2022 and the log book was last updated May 2022.
I wonder if that means it is a trader in disguise, or genuine private sale but they bought the car, found it to be troublesome so straight away tried to move it on.

    Well, this is excruciating.
TM3 / Y looks very attractive right now, but then I have to consider that against the large cost it still is and whether that can be justified.

    YOLO.

Just go for it, you can wonder if it's justified whilst grinning your face off at the acceleration.

Yes, because that wasn't an issue with certain models of petrol/diesel cars also.

Ford had problems with exploding fuel tanks in the 1970s.

There have also been issues with certain models of Vauxhall in the late 2000s.

You'll probably be happy to know that we have 2 EVs, an Ioniq and an Enyaq. Neither have caught fire.

Things happen occasionally, that doesn't mean there's an inherent risk any greater than making a different decision.

Even the basic TM3 can get from 0-60 in 6 seconds. That'll be plenty fast enough!
