Mines now gone to payment pending. I normally get mine around the 18th of April. The latest I've received mine is the 21st, but because of the Easter bank holidays and the way the days fell this year it might delay it slightly. The later end of next week I think people will start receiving payments

So what actually happens once you request the repayment does each individual case get examined by HMRC before paying out?

Correct me if I'm wrong 😊 but as of my experience, my first tax refund was around 5 years ago which got pulled for security checks pretty sure this was viewed and checked by someone most likely as they had no information about me.
All previous years since have all gone through automatically (automatically meaning pretty sure its all computered) and I'm pretty sure they only get pulled (checked manually) either completely randomly or if anything on your return has drastically changed causing suspicion or if you've entered your return wrong.

I tend to do a couple other peoples returns and the last few years have been hiccup free.

Also to note, I do not provide detailed expenses as I've heard that can cause them to check for receipts, so we add everything up and do 1 lump sum for expenses.
I would also note that having expenses way too high for what your earnings are would also cause flags to arise 😉

And another note is I've actually heard it's best to do is as soon as possible (6th) due to there being so many as they tend to be pushed through. (my first return which was pulled was submitted mid-late april)

Above might be folk tales so don't hold me to it!

There isn’t any basis for your point on the expenses point. There are certain triggers for HMRC to further inspect a return and, from what I can remember, they also select around 9% of returns randomly for further scrutiny.

The last point doesn’t stack up either. Over a quarter of all returns (around 3 million) are submitted in January with around 30000 in the final hour!

Yes, the rules had to be changed to make the enquiry period one year from filing, rather than one year after the latest filing date, because people perceived that a longer enquiry window meant longer for HMRC to investigate, so everyone filed shortly before 31 January (it never made sense to leave it until the last day in case the software crashed or you had a power cut).
