So you have no written proof of the debt? If he is willing to sign a statement of the debt then fine, but that still doesn't oblige him to pay anything. You can make him promise whatever you like, but ultimately the only way to put pressure on is to sue him via small claims process, if it's less than £10k. But even a CCJ doesn't mean he will pay it, unless you take enforcement action. Probably futile if he can't pay and has no seizable assets.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
