There will be difficulties, I'm sure. But I shall overcome!
And yes, a yurtlet is planned for a bathroom. With an environmentally friendly composting toilet. The felt you talk about is used in traditional yurts but I would use acrylic coverings and other forms of insulation. The crown is just like a window. Open it when the weather is fine, close it when it's not - it's pretty simple really.
I plan on 3 interconnecting yurts - like a one bedroom flat really. And I've had enough leaky damp smelly one bedroom flats in my time to be able to cope if the yurt springs a leak.
Now JoJoB, let my post be a lesson to you - don't post posts when you know little or nothing about the subject. And I am very pleased to have enabled you to have this little lesson - in the spirit of frugality nothing is wasted - even a less than well informed post. lol :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Kitty i do cardmaking and sometimes I go in to my childrens school and do cardmaking with them for special occasions. Did you fancy doing something in the community with it? or perhaps you could start a card making group ? and charge a small fee to the participants for use of your things ! It would probably be ladies, I know my oap neighbour goes to a circle group where they do different activities, you could donate to something like that. Then they would always get repeated use. Also my local library and most librarys have homework groups which have arty bits2012 - Emergency savings fund goal by December 2012 £3000.000

That's quite alright moany. I have been planning this for about 6 months so have done a fair bit of research. Was supposed to be making the plunge this april but then realised that's when baby is due, so it will be next april now as spring is the best time for doing all the building and settling in. So I have another year to make notes! <scribbles>
Will be heading to Wales this summer to visit yurtler families and have a chat about what to expect and pick up yet more info. But a little like having a child it is still a leap of faith and all the research in the world will probably not fully prepare for the reality.
But that's the fun of it, innit.2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -

JoJo I hope you will come back and tell us about your yurt-living experience when you do start? as I said before I'm too old for such a major change but I love to hear about people who are living differently.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hello Simplifiers...!
Bails is going to think I'm stalking her on MSE, but this is definitely a thread for me!I have been reading back a few pages and nodding at virtually everything.
I have gone from being full time employed and running a business alongside my day job, to self employed freelance usually working less than 25 hours per week (compared to 70+ hours before).
Like many of you, I'm decluttering my house (not that I have ever been a hoarder), minimising wastage, getting smarter about food/groceries, and trying to eek every last bit of value out of the money I spend.
My wardrobe has been reduced down to 14 items suitable for this season, and a further 8 for the summer (I may need to add to this a little bit!). This feels really good, and it has inspired me to tackle the rest of the house with similar ruthlessness. It will be a big year for ebaying and freecycling!
I am really keen to pick up lots of tips, and chat with similar-minded people. Thanks for making such a great thread.

At Mums care home card making is one of the activities thats done with the residents. A lady used to go and do it with them and she sold some of her cards too but then it wasn't viable for her anymore what with petrol costs, materials etc. I think she charged for it and maybe if the cost had gone up the care home wouldn't have afforded it.........not sure. Anyway, the staff decided to carry it on as the residents loved in. Many of them, including my Mum, were immobile so couldn't get to shops and to feel they had created something themselves was good for their self esteem. Materials aren't cheap so every so often I had a clear out of my card making things and send them off to help them out. I belong to a birthday card group as well and they're very kind and send me stuff to forward on to the home.
Just a thought anyway.
I've been de-clutteringt my desk................taken all morning and I still haven't really finished..............paperwork is sorted and filed away but its all the 'sundry' bits............but timetables that need to be handy but I've found a home for them. Still can;'t see the desktop but its covered with things that need to go upstairs to the spare room (because I forgot to take them up there last week) ...............I'm getting there though. Very slow.........slower than I thought I'd be but I'm on my way:T
Notebooks is the next thing. ............already done one to keep tabs on what I spend for christmas and birthdays............now got to sort one for food/cleaning stuff and one for my trivia spending .............lol:jMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

great thread!
my husband , who is not guru - like in any way, made an observation about someone two years ago, which made me change the way i think . He said " that man is always shovelling sand onto his own mountain"-- i asked him to expain, and he said that he meant that just when this guy gets what he thinks he wants( ie ontop of his mountain), he then wants bigger and better, and therefore has to climb higher- therefore the struggle never ends.
i thought about this and changed my own life quite dramatically. stuff is just stuff, we dont need it, but sometimes the price we pay for getting it in terms of work and worry is wasting our own lives.
happiness is wanting what youve got ( ie life) , not getting what you want ( ie stuff)
good luck to allxxx0 -
