A good tip for deciding how precious something is to you is to ask yourself ' If I was to emigrate to Australia would I pay to have it transported ? ' Not sure where I heard this .
Aha this is a good one which I've seen in action. My DD age 23 has moved to Australia to be with her Australian boyfriend. She was a sentimental hoarder of stuff as well as a buyer of books and i was soooo impressed with her ruthlessness in bagging up stuff for the charity shop. She went off with one big suitcase and has a small amount of things (mostly fav books) at mine and at her dad's. It even prompted me to go into the loft and sort out old photos among other things! i also took 8 carrier bags of my stuff to the charity shop that week - yippee :T0 -

...will try Hester...mind you dont know what ideas I might wake up with in the morning!
I was thinking this morning about a little 20 minute video that is making the rounds at the moment in the blogosphere and....lo and behold..... doing a quick run through blogs tonight (and adding a couple more to my favourites ---but its okay Hester, they're not MSE type ones!!! lol) and one of my current favourites is featuring it now..., ie "The Story of Stuff" - so the latest blog I have found it on is:
www.bean-sprouts.blogspot.com/
on the 30.12.2007 entry.
I personally think it puts things very clearly.
Enjoy.
(and - dont worry Hester - that blog is already on my "recommended reading" list!)0 -
Thats good news Ceridwen, otherwise I might need to spend a day decluttering my blog list!!!

Hi,
yesterday and today OH and I managed to declutter the bedroom and the boxroom. Gave lots of bags of clothes and shoes to a charity shop today. Also threw out junk that I haven't used in ages. Going to a friends house in a bit and going to try to give away some jewellery! Have some stuff to try and sell too.
Defo going to watch 'the story of stuff' tomorrow.
LOL

Thank you for this Ceridwen. Could you point me to the video on this site? Is there a sort of U tube page?Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
Goodness imagine if every household in britain got rid of aalllll their stuff the landfill would be full!!!
I agree with all this clutter clearing but what is everyone doing to ensure that these lovely empty spaces/shelves/ rooms/boxes/ bags/ rooms/ lofts dont get filled back up again for another clearout - (Nature abhors a vacum) apparently!
my personal strategy at the moment is to
avoid shops - I notice that by not even have a windowshop things arent coming home - how long I can keep this up Im not entirely sure.
Books I buy books but not in the same quantaties as before and when I am done with it - it goes on amazon!
I think Im going to ask people to stop buying me presents.... that will help
keep going everyone.:j Where there is a will there is a way - there is a way and I will find it :j0
