Noted Charis:D - just one leetle query re that - how to prevent the added "protein" appearing after a while. Not forgotten years ago - when I had bought a large quantity of rice - that part way through it I found it had acquired "added extras" so to say (not of a suitable variety for a vegetarian!;) ). I dont expect it would do any harm - and I recall my father mentioning episodes decades ago of having had to remove "livestock" from biscuits before eating them anyway_pale_ - but I dont think I want to make that a family "tradition".
Hi ceridwen you might find this interesting

Hi Shaz
Now thats what I call being prepared for all eventualities - come the Revolution we're all coming round yours okay?:D (for an M.S.E. party of course) . Noted the amount of storage those Mormon women have on your YouTube clips t'other day - whew! So thats what those Ikea type wooden shelves are there for - and I thought they were for bookshelves and music storage;) . 'Twas envious of those cellars they have in their houses - few British houses have that amount of storage space (I've had to put all my DIY bits, spare storage and cookery bits, etc up in the loft and clamber to and fro via the loft ladder when they're required - and of course many people dont have a usable loft space I know.)
I think I will just stick to standard level amount of stuff in stock (against more "everyday" type emergencies - like strikes, personal illness, sheer plain being too busy to shop).
I did note that bit re sifting flour prior to putting in storage - due to the fact that "eggs" are in there anyway - waiting too long storage to go and hatch on us (eugh!). So I reckon I will sift my flour (and presumably that 7 kg of rice too?) and transfer them to spare plastic containers I have. Hopefully that will stop them "growing" before I have the chance to eat them.....;)0 -

Me too ................although my 16yo doekeep telling me the end of the world isn't coming:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Hubby got made redundant recently but the NHS found him a new job straightaway so we were ok but it got me thinking  his redundancy package would have lasted us 6 months ..................not long really
The other reason i am stockpiling is buying bulk is sometimes cheaper and stocking up at lower prices means not paying more later my plan is to get to 6 months of everything and then just stock up on offers or got to haves and supplement with veg from garden and a box scheme ,we also have bought half a pig and a lamb (we arent completely veggie yet but buy ethical) for the freezer the plan i gues is to be able to shop at home cheaper than at the shops
The mormon womens videos i found fascinating i also belong to a mormon ladies foodstorage group on yahoo (i am not a mormon by the way) lots of tips and recipes for using and rotating stock too

Being stocked up with food - and the other essentials of life (toiletry stuff, cleaning stuff, etc) is a form of saving in effect. Its one that is taxfree, inflation-proof (indeed these days helps deal with inflation!) and doesnt count as "capital" if one has to claim benefit for a while.
I have had to claim benefit before now - so am very aware that they havent increased the limit of money savings one is allowed to have before deductions from benefit start for years....and years.....and years! In other words the amount of money savings allowed has been cut drastically to what it used to be - and is now pretty negligible to say the least (at this rate - a few more years of that amount being frozen and we wont actually be allowed to have any savings at all in effect if we are at risk of being on benefit).
But savings in the form of being stocked up with food, etc - then that is quite safe from being counted as "capital" - so it makes sense to have plenty of that type of "savings".0 -
This is the stash
And thats just the food not including all the crisps and nuts i have under the bed in big boxes !!or the toiletries in the airing cupboard

shaz -crikey ! All that stuff ! You're so lucky to have the storage space. When the builder actually turns up to finish what he started out back store room/building site/boiler room can be re-arranged and I'llhave some space in there but not that much. Mum used to use my old bedroom to store all her special offers and BOGOFs in then if the weather was bad or she couldn't get out at least she could eat.
We've always kept a well stocked freezer and larder which has been a boon recently with OH not working and money being so tight.......we've managed to live from what we've got up until now, apart from fresh veg.
Mind you now, we're back to the weekly shop again and it makes wish we'd stored more...........still, don't always think of these things till something crops up.Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

Right - I'm progressing away here today - thats 2 minor DIY jobs done (courtesy of other people) on my home here today and delivery taken of one (crikey - did I really order THAT big a one - waterbutt?) and working away on arranging a little "venture" I have my eye on - which might possibly turn out to be a joint "venture"...so 'tis all going on here today chez ceridwen. One busy day...but productive.
Checking through my blogs I like to read....felt a little "down" at a comment in one blog (as it was a bit negative) and wondered if I am one of the people it is aimed at (I wont repeat it or say which blog...oh well...life happens). I then worked my way through onto another blog I pop into and the smile came back to my face - thanks Sue of

who I have mentioned before a while back (not for moneysaving reasons - as its not that sorta blog - but as one of the ones I personally like to pop into sometimes). Sue does me much greater credit than I am due for with her comment - but 'twas nice to read nevertheless! Still grinning slightly at her astonishment a while back - when she realised some of her visitors were popping over from a moneysaving website - still - she picked herself back up from t'floor and popped back and is now an M.S.E. habitue. Nowt like a bit of cross-fertilisation!;)0 -
I always have bottled water stashed as no water in an emergency would be drastic. My friends think I'm crazy doing that but they haven't seen anything yet. I'm inspired to go and load up lots of tinned stuff as it'll last for ages. If there's no emergency the food won't be wasted as long as I remember to check the dates. It's so good to know that there's other like-minded people. I don't feel pessimistic, I feel realistic." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."
