jenpoptab's right, you may need to use the harness from a set of reins in this kind of buggy, and they may argue that that's what you should do in any case rather than relying on straps. However, it seems they're saying that the straps are OK, and they're not suggesting you should use a separate harness as well.

Which seems strange, because I think all the buggies I ever had suggested using a separate harness and not relying on the straps. Mind you, that's a long time ago now!

I'd go for the 'unfit for purpose' argument if your daughter's already squashed in the back!

Thanks Sue, I knew it was an option to use an additinal harness and would happily do this if itwas just the case that he was wriggling his arms free but that isn't what is happening here, the shoulder straps simply don't offer any restraint at all - very bizaree if you ask me! I can't see the point in making buggies for kiddies that don't do the job?

I think that you are right about saying more about the back bit not being suitable, i haven't really said too much on those lines atm as my main gripe was the safety aspect of the buggy - I can't believe that someone like Graco could actually manufacture something that doesn't seem to be tested or trialed at all?? Do they ever ask parents whats best or just draw a picture and make a buggy!! ??

I always thought that adjustable straps meant they could be adjusted to fit any child in the appropriate age range (within reason) otherwise what is the post in making them adjustable. I had a Silver Cross pushchair - which although really sturdy - was fantastic AND all the straps adjusted to FIT properly.

I suggest you contact Mothercare Head Office and take the issue up with them. You should ask for the pushchair buyer. I had a similar problem with mothercare and got it resolved.

I had a problem with a mothercare single mattress which you could feel the springs through after 14 months of use - and my daughter is small and slim for her age and wasn't comfortable. I know it was out of its 12 month guarantee, but I didn't expect to have to replace it so soon. I phoned up Mothercare and they asked me to take it in and the shop manageress said it was fine. When I asked her if she would let her children sleep on it - she said she didn't have any - which explains a lot. She then proceeded to drop it on the floor without putting something down first to keep the mattress clean, so she could test it flat. She still said it was fine. When she lifted it again there were dirty marks on it - I pointed them out and she said that they were there when brought it in - which they weren't. She also said what did I expect as I had bought the cheapest mattress - really loudly in the shop. I realised I wasn't going to get anywhere with her - so I left. One of the assistants helped me carry the mattress to the car and apologised to me as she was so embarassed at the way I had been treated.

Anyway - I contacted the Head Office and told them my story - I ended up talking to the mattress buyer who was lovely, agreed with everyhting I said and replaced the mattress with a better quality one and even thanked me because as I pointed out - it was Mothercare's Brand on the mattress and if they weren't fit for purpose they need to be aware of it and go back to the manufacturers.

I also ended up talking to a senior manager on the retail side who took up my issue with the store manager and agreed that she would benefit from additional customer services training and asked me to leave any action for him to sort out internally.

I hope Mothercare sort this out for you. Last year I returned a mothercare cosytoes and mothercare pram parasol to them because bits came off them. (The cosytoes zip came off in my then 10 month old's hand.) They gave me my money back immediately and sent them off for testing.

Although I'm happy with how this was dealt with, I wouldn't choose to shop there now because most baby stuff can be found cheaper elsewhere.

As for the buggy, I LOVE my Maclaren buggy. It's had some real use and it's completely as it was when I bought it over a year ago. (Apart from the banana stains!) My friend bought her Mothercare buggy after I got mine and the raincover tore within weeks and now the wheels are falling apart.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Mothercare infuriate the heck out of me too.

two summers ago when my daughter was just toddling, a display of stairgates which has been propped up innapropriatly fell on top off her, sent her flying, she split her lip and tongue amd had a black eye.

Mothercares first aider wasn`t on duty, she`d gone to lunch so they got the arcades first aider to come and have a look, he came, with NO kit and just said `ooo that looks bad`. That was it.

I was furious and a tad uncontrolable so took her to A&E.

Wrote to head office who apologiesed and sent me a £10 voucher. Gee Thanks.

so it is obviously clear they don`t give a monkeys about our childrens safety.

Stick to your guns on this one........ its `YOUR` childerns safety at risk. You can replace a pushchair not a child. Tell mothercare that !
