please help me i am so frightened!! tv licensing nightmare

ok- im not sure where to start really and i appologise if this is in the wrong board i looked all over and couldn't find anything more suitable

i'm 25 and live by myself with my two small children (6yr old + 13 months)
my ex still pays alot of the bills etc despite not living here, he is really good and we are still really close

tonight however after popping out to get my daughter some tea we come back (this is llike 8pm ish) and ive put the baby to bed only to notice a car parked accross my drive. i came downstairs anyway and went through to sit with my daughter when there was a knock at the door - as i live on my own i never answer the door in the dark so i said hello through the door and explained i wouldn't answer it, and this man litterally shouted WHERE IS ***** ****** (my ex's name) so i said im sorry he doesn't live here to which he started asking how long i've lived here and who just pulled up in the bmw parked on my drive
by this time i was getting so distressed, this very foreign sounding man was shouting on my doorstep calling me a liar saying that he was home and did live here and if he didn't come to the door then he was going to take further action, he wouldn't listen to a word i was saying and wouldn't even tell me what company he was from - every time i tried to speak he shouted over me.
he tried to ask me lots of questions and i didn't answer as you hear abnout these scams all the time although i did give my surname as i had no idea what it was about at the time and i was so scared

after honestly about ten minutes of him totally abusing me on my own doorstep he announced he was from the tv licensing authority and if i didn't let him in right now he would prosecute me

god im sorry for going on i am a wreck writing this and crying my eyes out

so, absolutely terrifed by this stage - he was banging the door and then backed off into the street to shout at the top of his voice MR ****** YOU DONT HAVE A VALID TV LICENSE AND I AM SHOUTING SO ALL YOUR NEIGHBOURS KNOW, IF YOU DONT LET ME IN NOW I AM GOING TO GET A SUMMONS

i tried my hardest to tell him through the door that he doesn't live here and if he gave me a tel number i would call up someone NOW and sort this out myself but he refused so i told him to come back in daylight and then we could sort it but again he refused, he still just carried on shouting at me and threatening me - i said that i had two small children in the hosue and he was frightening us but he wouldn't back down

my daughter by this point is histerical and screaming so i left the front door and went through to the dining room to comfort her and he shouted through the letter box that he is off to get a summons and will be back

i have spoken to their dad and he says that he is on a quarterly payment thing where it comes right out of his bank - he is out on his works party tonight so cant check his statements until he gets in later this evening

i will be so greatful for any advice you can give me - if it turns out he has missed a payment then i am more than happy to pay the whole damn upcoming year myself - thats not the issue and if this guy had actually told me what was going on rather than just shouting and screaming at me i might of been able to sort something out - now i have visions of them towing my car or him stalking us until i leave the house next time and really terrifing my kids - he was obviously watching us earlier

please help me i am so frightened just now

thank you so much and im sorry its so long winded

  • This was not the TV license people. Call the police.
Nearly there! Been struggling for 7 years but the results are showing. :j
  • I would agree with the above post. The TV Licencing people are always round our area and I've NEVER seen them behave like that.

    Hi,

Poor you, i dont have any advice as such, but i justed wanted to send you big hugs.

I dont think he had any right to do this  and i would phone tv licence company to complain tomorrow morning, i prob would have phoned police whilst he was there.

hope you have calmed down and hope your little ones are ok now. Some people are so inconsiderate x
  • Totally not the t.v people. Must have been awful for you, call the police and inform them of anything you can rememebr about this distasteful person.e

  • Whether this was the TV licencing people or not (and I doubt it was) if anything similar happens again, call the police on 999 immediately. You do not have to put up with such harrassment, and the police will sort it out.
    I can spell - but I can't type
  • Honey, I hope your feeling a bit better now. Is your daughter settled now? If he turns up again phone 999 without any hesitation. I dont think he would have any rights to enter your property, but I only know about Scots law. I'm sure someone else will know for sure. Big hugs xx

i'd contact both the police and tv licensing, if the guy returns dont engage him just call the police and record it on your phone if you can
disgusting behaviour hope the kiddies are ok
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • thank you all so much - i am still totally just blown away and sat here going through it all in my head - i feel sick at what happened and i will call them up first thing in the morning once it is hopefully a bit clearer and i'm calmer

im making notes on what actually happened so i can eventually make a complaint and i'm going to seek legal advice too as surely if this was infact an officer then he is breaking the data protection by shouting my ex's name in the street for all to hear without the threatening behaviour

i did tell him i was going to phone the police but to be honest i wasn't sure they would even bother with something like this plus you never know whether you'd call 999 or if its not really an emergency. my friend had her £40,000 car smashed up last week by yobs and the police wouldn't even come

what a world we live in eah

thanks again - i really appreciate you all taking the time to reply and i will keep you updated as to what happens

I have my doubts he was genuine too. I messed up badly with forgeting about TV licence (twice-I have a blank spot about it ! ) and got 2 visits-neither was in the least confrontational (2 different people). I'd call the licencing people first thing-and if they can't confirm on the spot he was genuine call the police imediately. Personally I suspect you had a lucky escape by not answering the door.

  • Trust me, the police would be bothered and would turn up. If he turns up again, let him scream and shout as much as he wants (and for as long as he wants) as soon as he starts, call 999 and tell them theres a man threatening you, you're trapped in your home with 2 small children and you're scared. Put the phone somewhere near the door so the operator can hear this muppet (they record the phonecalls see?) but don't tell this muppet what you're doing. Hopefully the coppers will arrive as he's in full flow. Get the vehicles reg plate too.....
