This notion that both Agile and Tracker could spike due to tensions in Russia don’t seem to be bearing out in reality. Just a day or two after drone strikes in Moscow, uk gas whole sale have plummeted 14% today.  Hardly the sign of a worried market.  It seems the west has successfully weaned itself off the need for Russian gas.

I’m not saying there won’t be spikes but I don’t think we will see anything like the last 12 months again, not caused by Russia anyway.
The weakness in wholesale prices, if sustained, also means that SVT prices, and indeed fixes, are likely to be lower than recent predictions from the likes of Cornwall Insight. The wholesale price of gas for the forthcoming winter has declined very significantly in the past month or so.

The biggest impacts I have observed to dailies seem to be the weather (wind is good) and if Europe is filling up their gas reserves (last summer agile and tracker were expensive during the period they were filling reserves, might have also been due to typical low wind summer weather as well).

If its the same this year, I will check if Agile has the same 9 month t&c as the tracker tariff, if it does I will ride out the expensive summer cost.

Agile rates are loaded between 4pm and 7pm - the tariff works better for those that can load shift during the day but like tracker is following the wholesale rate.

As the Ofgem price cap SVT rates fall come 1st July and neither tracker nor Agile benefit from government support on wholesale rates - what looks like a really good deal at moment will become less attractive.

For electricity I will stick with Agile (have EV and cook on gas) depending on wholesale elec. prices and gas futures will review monthly whether to stay on tracker gas and agile or whether jumping onto the standard SVT make sense.

Tue those few hours do influence the average rate more than other hours.  I am lucky I dont follow the typical usage pattern.

Just in case you have not checked your App. for tomorrow Saturday - some really low rates from midday onwards dropping to sub 1p KWhr  from 2.30pm till 3pm. Plan to stay in and put the car on charge :)
  • I've read most of this thread, i keep seeing a reference to "tracker" as an alternative to "Agile" - what's that? i assume it's not the Standard Variable Rate.  My octopus options don't seem to include an option called tracker.
I'm thinking of moving to Agile... about the only thing i can't easily timeshift is our Electric oven, so I'm inclined to just leave it to chance as whether that is too much of a deal breaker.
Is there any news on how/if Agile would work with some of the discussion on EV "battery backup" for the grid?  my EV is due a software upgrade shortly which would allow that sort of reverse charging.

Answering my own question (immediately above)...
Tracker is in "beta", and you have to sign up. Next tranch of 50000 who've applied/signed up get accepted 1 July.  I signed up. It looks simpler for my use cases than Agile. If i lived alone... Agile all the way, but i have 4 adults to think of, all on different working shift patterns.

Assuming you not exporting energy, the main difference is Agile prices are in 30 minute interval periods, tracker is the same price for the entire day.

There is also another major change though in that Agile doesnt have a waiting list and a 9 month restriction to rejoin it. Is 30 days instead.  (Am I wrong on this, anyone can correct me, I wont be offended).

Agile was still 30 days when I signed up to it about 6 weeks ago, and no indication that there would be any delay leaving it if the need arose.

Worth noting the standing charge on Agile (November 2022 v1) in my area is 46.96p per day - if you go through all the tariffs listed as 'current' most if not all on the Octopus site in my area are quoting 60.18p per day.  So if you are a very low user (empty property etc.) there might be some benefit of Agile just for standing charge saving.

Edited because I am stupid - yes tracker is listed and has the same standing charge as Agile i.e. in my area 46.96p

60p a day is insane, I will miss the 21p a day which I am paying until start of July.  At least 46p isnt as bad as can be and blow softened a tiny bit with 1p day reduction on gas SC on new gas tracker.
