@oglop - surely the solicitor taking out insurance on the property is the responsible thing to do - rather better than ringing you and saying "oops, sorry your property was ransacked by squatters and set fire to - so now you don't have a rental property, just a charred building plot".  I suspect you'd be rather less happy with that scenario.  And if it was only £720, I think you maybe got off quite lightly - I paid a chunk more than that for unoccupied property insurance.  Plus if you do decide to sell, in the information for buyers they ask about insurance and if you don't have it, why not.

Who is the solicitor acting as Attorney for - yourself?  As any Power of Attorney for the deceased ceases on death.
    i feel we're going off-topic :p

boojewels: perhaps, but it's the complete lack of communication that bothers me. this should have been brought up 9 months ago, when it was first technically empty! this is what annoys me most. then, out of the blue, a "you need to pay 720 pounds" without any explanation. that is insurance for a year anyway- she knows my plans with the house. grr. besides, it gets regular visits by neighbours / the guy doing the construction work. i am not worried about the safety of the house. also, i, myself, gave power of attorney to the solicitor, by the way, as i'm out of the country.

jowwie: thank you for the link. i may look into short-term insurance, if it's possible and at a reasonable price. thank you

was that a renewal of policy, rather than an alteration to a current policy?
For the insurance? No, new insurance policy completely
Seems very sensible to me and yes, the solicitor as the responsible person would need to evidence your wish as executor, to act against advice.

It's more the lack of communication than anything that bothers me.

Anyway, it just got granted. 38 weeks it took

Time to pop open the champa...actually nah, it's 1230am here and I'm already in bed :p
I don’t think ‘Congratulations’ is the right word given how long this has dragged on - but I’m glad it’s finally moving for you.

Oglop - congratulations but it's about time.  I hope the paper grants arrive quickly and sorting out the estate runs smoothly from now on.
