Hopefully this is a cubic to ft mis calculation 👍

Hi all, hoping someone can advise. I recently had smart meters installed and honestly wish I hadn't. My problem is that I can see my gas usage is really high compared to pre-smart. When I recognised this early on, I refuse to switch on the heating unless absolutely necessary but before smart I was putting on the heating. Even reducing the heating control the usage is higher than pre smart. EDF just won't listen. I am comparing KWh. I was away on Saturday, and the gas usage registered 35KWh. The heating is on a timer but it was set to come on if the the temp dropped below 16 degrees for an hour as I forgot to switch it off, but my heating only normally comes on at 18 degrees anyway. Honestly don't know what to do as EDF just won't listen.
Where are you getting this 35kWh reading from?

Look at your last statement and check that you smart gas meter serial number matches what is shown on your statement. Billing for a smart gas meter is always in cubic metres. If the old meter was cubic feet then the supplier can sometimes get into a mess if it doesn’t update its systems and the National database.
Interesting, I'll check. Although I've been comparing my meter readings before smart and after smart and using the conversion to KWh for both periods so not waiting for my bill to come through.
    What formula are you using?
  • This is all m3 calculation. My previous meter was calculating m3, just checked and I have converted all m3 units to KWh. I've used average readings, so it could be that all of a sudden my gas hob and boiler together have become faulty and using too much gas, the old meter was faulty and under reporting or the new smart meter has an issue and over reporting. I'm using double the UK average kWh in a day when i know I have reduced usage since the smart meter has been installed.

I'm getting my boiler looked at in a hope that is the issue but I didn't have an issue before the smart meter.

Did you previous meter have a decimal point in the display;   does the new one ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Download the free App BRIGHT and you can see your 30 minute usage.
  • This is what I have from EDF, although I think he is looking at M3 and not KwH but figures are figures, before 21st Feb, I used gas more and it was school holidays, since smart meter, reduced it massively as I have mentioned but the usage below is still high post smart meter

For 168 days you have used 253 kwh till 14th Feb
    average per day:1.5 kwh
For 7 days you have used 34 kwh till 21st Feb
    average per day: 4.8 kwh
After meter installed you have used for 21 days: 105 kwh
    average per day: 5 kwh

Was the meter installed on the 21st of February like it sounds in the message?

In this case you have the same usage directly before and after the installation.

the average for 168 days to 14th Feb is fairly irrelevant really because it includes the period right back into late summer before any heating would have been used. I don't know about where you are but it was a good way into November before I needed heating on at all this winter.

Can you confirm what you used between say December 1st and February 1st? A daily average from that period would be a better comparison for the later use.

Your use doesn't sound particularly high to me from what we've seen from others on here I have to say. The 35kWh you mention having used in a day when you were out but the heating was left on thermostat if it dropped below 16 might not be unreasonable either if the house was dropping below 16 - heating coming on for half an hour, then switching off for a while before repeating the process - that half an hour heating everything up from cold will use proportionately far more gas than subsequent hours when everything is warmed up and ticking over. If the boiler had done that all day I can see it having chewed through that amount easily from what you've said.

Don't really see a problem with those averages.

Assuming 21st the after tge meter - was smart meter change.

In fact if that 5kWh all you are using for heat - that's impressively low.

You aren't accidently reading say the gas from your ihd - as don't at least some display already converted to kWh ?.

And the conversion factor - just over 10 iirc.  Would turn 3 into 30+.

Don't have gas - but just snippets from reading other past posts (about them using a nominal calorific value rather than actual meaning unitscand so prices out by %).

Even a small house gas combi can be rated for  25-30 kW per hour.  And will always burn more after 1st switched on than daily average.  But it does seem strange cf your normal 10-15 other days for the hr.
  • 5kWh per day ! Holy moly.
today i used 10kWh for the first hour !
raising the temperature from 14C to 16C with a target of 17.5C to achieve (which took 5 hours). Boiler set at 55C
So far, after 10 hours, used 37kwh (£3.78)
so 5kwh a day is incredible
