Update: So I pulled the washing machine out to look at the grey pipe. It comes out at the top corner of the washing machine and its fairly long and there's a natural loop in it.

I called out a plumber and he said given the distance of the pipe and that it leaves the washing machine at the top, there wouldn't be enough pressure for it to travel all the way from the sink back into the washing machine.

As a result, I called out AEG as part of the machine's warranty. Their engineer said that its the plumbing. He unplugged the grey pipe and showed water flowing from the sink out. He suggested that the grey pipe should flow into the white pipe at a higher angle.

I don't know who to believe now! They both make reasonable sense. However, since I've had the washing machine for 4 years and it hasn't been an issue before, why would it start recently? Am I reasonable to think its a washing machine issue and push back on AEG/the retailer?

In 13 years of repairing washing machines I've never come across these symptoms caused by the machine.
