It looks more cementy, its not limescale is it? try crushing a bit to see if it turns to powder.
Are you in a hard water area?

Water is getting back down the grey pipe from the washing machine when you drain the sink. The pipe needs re-routing so that it goes up before it goes back down to the washing machine. Try gently pulling the pipe through from the back of the cupboard and making it loop up to under the sink.

Hmm, so what is that top grey pipe for and when is water meant to flow through it?

There are two pipes coming through the cupboard from behind the washing machine. One will be the cold water feed and the grey one right in the middle of the photo is the outlet. Because the outlet hose falls from the trap spigot water can run straight back in to the washing m/c. You need to create a sort of upside-down U bend

Does your washing machine drain pipe connect into a pipe that also connects to a sink? Mine used to fill with water as some idiot (me) had the drain pipe going up to a connecter instead of down so water was coming out of the sink and back into the machine through the drain hose...

This is the usual cause. Water draining from the sink finds it easier to go into the washing machine than down the drain, either because of bad routing or a partial blockage. Make sure the pipe between the sink and the washing machine goes as high as possible between the two, check for any blockages too.

Not sure if this helps but this is what the piping looks like under my sink. I haven't pulled out the washing machine yet. (Avoiding it if I can.)

That is a bit of a weird setup. Looking at mine it has a bottle trap under the plughole and a pipe that goes straight out to the drains, no u-bend.

Also ideally the grey drain pipe from the washer should go straight into the drains, not via the sink pipes.

I would dismantle the pipes under the sink and check they are all clear and not full of gunk that may be restricting the flow from the sink and making it go back into the washing machine. If that ubend is getting filled up with water too high, then the washing machine wouldnt be able to pump the water out effectively.

If there is enough free-play on the grey drain pipe, you might just be able to disconnect it and re-lay it over the top of the cabinet, instead of through the hole, giving you a bit of "fall" towards the outlet.

If you suspect that the chunks are indeed lime-scale, rather than plastic, chuck them in a glass of vinegar and see if they fizz.

When the waste pipe comes out of the machine is it fixed higher than the drum at any point? The picture shows the grey waste pipe pointing downwards so it may be water still in the pipe when the pump stops is syphoning back into the machine.

You should be able to just pull some more of the grey waste pipe through the hole in the cabinet side and form it into a loop going upwards and tie it in position.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
