Bank sends new card to old address

My bank where I have my mortgage changed my address automatically for my bank account, but still kept an older address for the debit card from when it was sent back in 2018. I only noticed I had not been sent a new card when an Amazon flagged that a card was expiring. My bank clearly doesn't send out any emails to let me know and has a bug in their system with duplicating addresses. I could only see it was an old address for the debit card when I went to the lost/stolen card feature and when it confirms the address it had one from 2018.

I called and got it sorted, but no mention of compensation for sending a card with personal details to a random person. This card shows my full name, who I bank with, my account number. This feels like a data protection breach.

Does anyone know if there is anything under consumer rights around compensation for banks making mistakes like this?

You should have updated your details when you moved. Not the banks fault.

I would expect something (got a case of wine from a bank when they sent my info in the same envelope as another customer's) but if no actual loss then I don't see it's worth much. Doesn't sound like you know anybody else even actually received/opened the mail.

Surely you have had a new card since 2018.

debit card from when it was sent back in 2018.

Didn't you notice that all your bank statements have had the wrong address on them since 2018 ?

Even if you are on electronic only notifications have you never bothered to check those statements ?

I don't think any compensation is due as you have not suffered any loss at all.

I have current accounts with Lloyds and Bank of Scotland. They both ask me quite often to check and confirm that my address, email and phone number are up to date.

    Don't other banks do this?

You can certainly claim all your quantifiable losses. Which, unless there is something you haven't told us, are precisely zero.

It wasn't sent to a random person, it was sent to you. The actual recipient should have sent it back.

To offer possible answers to a couple of other points raised:
@sherambler debit cards can have much longer expiry dates these days than historically, my Santander 123 card is valid until November 2026.
@kazwookie and @Ayr_Rage the OP does say that the account address was updated but the address for the debit card was not, I'm not sure how that could happen because the card is directly linked to the account so shouldn't need it's own address, but as the OP hasn't told us what bank it is there's no way for anyone else to say if they know how that banks works.
