Cheers Plumb1, (or should that be spidey LOL)

i will definately try ringing aol tomorrow, and ask for disconnection see if i get lucky  ;)  if they say no i'll either be on dialup or have to crawl back for the time being  :-[ checked out metronet but the one off fee seems to outway the monthly payment especially if you only stay for 3 months  :-/

i think you will find that every isp charge the connection fee.
but once you are connected you pay a reduced fee to change isp (The Migration fee is £17 plus VAT and is in place of the activation charge) so if you already got broadband its under £20
the isps that have no connection charge are those that have a much higher monthly cost and a year contract.

I have been trying to get broadband cheaply from AOL with no luck for about a month. Went through all the cancellation business as well. They were prepared to negioate cheaper deals on dial up. Neither suited me as one (£10.99) gave no unmetered access between 7 and 9pm (when I use it most) and the other (£12.99) meant I was tied to it for 12 months.

I am going to try and directly ask for it at £15.99 and see what happens.

    >:( i'm not amused, called aol today and asked for cancellations....edit

My friend used to work on the AOL tech support desk.
The people who deal with cancellations get paid a fair wack for "persuding a member to stay". My guess is that the individual you got through to has got his/her little speel down to a tee.

When my friend was there the standard practice was when a customer called to complain about bad service or requesting to cancel, the tech department would try to resolve the issue and if they failed they would be transfered to the "member save" department.
That department would automaticly offer a few free months. I think that way of doing things came to an end recently though.

The best thing to do is gather as much info on AOL competitors prices as possible and when put through to cancelations just question the price in relation to supplier x.
They will offer you a reduced rate similar or better than the competitor.

AOL has suffered declining member numbers for quite some time, they are very aware of this and will try to keep as many as possible.

Having said all that, the AOL way of delivering broadband is somewhat clunky. The shear amount of software it requires to be installed on your machine is amazing. Older machines will struggle or not function at all.
If you have the option I would go with another provider.
  • anybody had any luck getting anything of Aol yet??

Well I've had a couple of more goes with aol since my original post, with absolutely no luck.  :'(

Each time when challenged with my statement of some customers obviously getting preferential treatment to others in getting broadband at speacial offer prices for a year,  the stock reply is that offers are sent randomly & that they have no control over who does or doesn't receive them.

I can still have the wonderful deal of £5 off for the first 3 months, but nothing more.

Oh well aol, I've been a loyal long term customer, but we'll soon be parting company as my custom obviously isn't appreciated by you & I certainly am not on your A  or even your B list.  :(
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • hi cattie,
I've just tried again about five mins ago and again no luck, really nice chap that said I could have a month free while I was sorting out other broadband but he couldn't offer me anything asked why some people where getting £15.99 for broadband same as my dial up and he said a pop up comes up on his screen to say who gets it, so I asked him to tell his manager that I had been a member for years (1066 lol) he came back to say that even his manager didn't know how you get this privilage invitation for this offer !! so I suppose that means no chance for me but got a month free for now ;) but now got to find a better deal plusnet £27.49 for 2mb/2gb? or stay with aol for £29.99 1mb/unlimited well still confused
a please & thank you is all it takes
