@Roly98 - was this a response to the formal written complaint or just a phone complaint to CS. ?

You need to go beyond the CS level until you find someone who knows what they are talking about .
I sent it via their website using the complaints procedure ...you did say not to go through CS didn't you. How do I go higher?

    Email customercomplaints@britishgas.co.uk

Their own instructions (via CA) tell you to provide the volume.

Have sent an updated formal complaint to that email add... there's an automated response telling me it's not monitored and  to go to their complaints page  :(

Can I just ask... the opening reading which was on my welcome letter from BG, was 30330. I didn't take that reading...I assume the housing association did.
The volume reading now is 03093.
Do those 2 figures tally? I mean, one starts with 30 the other starts with 03?

If you were to scroll down the menu then  30330  would be there as the kWh reading but under it would be (30330/11.2)  02708   This is however approximate as the meter does not know the exact conversion rate as that can change form hour to hour due  to the calorific value of the gas.

Never rely on anyone else  a meter reading for you.

Okay do it isn't hard to convert readings...whichever one is given? So approx 02708 would be my opening reading

Its around a factor of 10, so yes. Based on the multiplier between the m³ and kWh on my meter, I'd estimate the start reading should have been around 2708.

That would put you at about 385m³ of gas used since then, or about £535 TOTAL (plus standing charge) since you moved in, at EPG rates, less if some of the time was before October last year.

That opening reading should tie in with the previous tenant

This is what gets me - either this situation has been ongoing since long before the OP moved in, OR someone should have flagged this when the opening reading for their occupation was given. Assuming that it isn't ongoing for a very long while you do have to question how the closing/opening readings were ratified?!
