As far as I'm concerned, separate bathrooms are essential for a happy marriage!

I have an en suite and it's just me in a 2 bed flat. I have to say I love that visitors and guests don't share my bathroom.
It is also useful if you might ever want to let a room to a lodger or let a property to sharers. Definitely a luxury not a must have though when buying for self. .
Officially in a clique of idiots

Most modern 2 bed flats have en-suites. It has almost become the norm.

I guess that is more to appeal to people doing flat shares and BTL landlords though.

    Had en-suite bedroom since 1994
1st house OH & I bought was 1950s 4 bed with family bathroom & tiny downstairs toilet. We both had teenage son and it was soon clear we needed more ‘facilities’ so built a very small en-suite in our bedroom. Bedroom still comfortable size, though not spacious.
In 2000 moved cross country to another 1950s 4 bed, with small en-suite off very spacious main bedroom, family bathroom with separate toilet & downstairs toilet. Both sons @ Uni by then & only younger one moved with us.
2021 moved into this 4 bed 1970s extended bungalow with en-suite toilet & basin & separate semi open😳 shower in main bedroom, a family bathroom, and small en-suite in guest bedroom. We’ve also reinstated a toilet in the attached garage as all the others are at the far side of the bungalow, which we call ‘the downstairs toilet’😂
I realise this is totally over the top to most, but as we both make several nighttime ‘visits’, the closer the facilities the better. Guest en-suite was also invaluable when elder son lived with us recently for 8 months while recovering from serious illnesses.
Obviously we don’t use all of them all of the time and I don’t mind cleaning the ones we do use.
    TLDR
If/when I’m on my own, no en-suite would probably be a deal breaker but I’ve been spoilt😊
