Hi Everyone
My friend recently bought one of those patchwork quilts from Aldi but unfortunately I was not quick enough and they appear to have sold out!
I have loads of odds and ends of material and old pillowcases/bed covers etc and was wondering has anyone ever made one themselves? I'm rubbish at hand sewing but ok with a machine and was wondering if anyone had any tips where to start, books that maybe useful, pictures of ones they've made even!!
I quite fancy doing it but think I just need a little bit more inspiration/confidence to give it ago!;)
Thank u!Back Comping after a 2yr break! :j0 -
Never made one but saw a cheats guide to square patterned ones before.
Cut your material into strips and sew together so you have stripes.
Then cut the stripes crossways into lots of strips giving lots of square strips. Then sew in alternate square strips. Does this make any sense when you read it? I know what I mean but could be speaking double dutch!Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
i have an ex-library book, 'the 7-day quilt' by josephine rogers, which talks you through it with lots of pictures. it's a real 70s job, so it may well be out of print now, but it looks simple enough and the basics wont have changed from decade to decade (just the colour-schemes). for when the kids have left home and i FINALLY get 5 minutes to myself.:rotfl:0

Hi bargainhuntermummy,
Have you seen this thread?
May we discuss Quilting?
There are some users there who are beginners at quilting, others who are old hands helping out and lots of links that should help too.
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep all the replies together.

I have a quilt which still needs quilting (if you see what I mean)
I bought a metal pattern from a craft shop because I wanted to do hexagons. I used the outside to cut out material and the inside to cut out paper. I wrapped the material around the papers and tacked it in place and hand sewed the hexagons together, then removed the tacking and papers.
I used my OHs old shirts for the patches (only way to get him to trow them out), a blanket for the filler and a sheet for the backing and binding.
By the time I'd got that far I was a bit bored with it, plus the whole thing was a bit cumbersome to hand quilt without a frame.
However, I now have a sewing machine, so I might get a round to finishing the thing off soon!
If you don't have a reason for wanting to use materials which don't lend themselves to it, then I would advise cutting out squares or rectangles and sewing them together by machine.
A blanket is a good, cheap filler, and nice and warm but it will never make a fluffy eiderdown. For that you'll need to buy specialist stuff from some fabric shops and craft shops.0 -

We have an older thread on quilting. I'll add your question to that.

For those of you interested, I heard on the radio that a Quilt Museum has opened in York. It's on my list for the summer holidays :j

I'm looking to make a quilt for my dd's and dgd. (First timer)
I've looked at various websites and found some lovely coloured squares. They are 5inches square.
Am I right in presuming that this would make 4inch square if I have 1/2 inch for the seam/join?
Also does anyone know how many squares I would need to make a quilt for a single bed? I worked it out to be aroun 310 squares but that seems an awful lot and doubt I could afford it.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Am trying to save money on christmas presents by making these and reckon I need to start asap.Newtonlot on an MSE mission0
