You press as you go along, and I mean PRESS not iron..........if you are just doing squares when you get to the end of a line, put the strip on your ironing board and press each seam on the wrong side to set it, then turn the strip over and starting at one end press all the seams in the same direction by holding up the long end of the strip and press the seam so it 'tips over' then move on to the next seam and do the same, this ensures that you get a crisp fold and no little tucks. Have a look at QNN Quilting news network)on the internet they have videos of various people quilting, Eleanor Burns is very good, and a great laugh as well, I saw her at the quilt show in Paducah in 2003, she had the place in an uproar, she makes quilts from strips of fabric, any bits she does not use she throws over her shoulder........ lots of tips on techniques etc and quilters demonstaring various bits of equipment.........
I could go on for hours, but better not, am off to the quilt show in Birmingham tomorrow, over 1,000 quilts to see.........................

One of the first lessons I learnt was that it is important to measure, cut and sew correctly to size - and the second that it is necessary to iron the pieces as you go. This makes the finished squares look really lovely. I took my first squares apart because I hadn't sewn them carefully, nor had I ironed them as I went along. As it was a log cabin pattern it looked awful and I was unhappy with it. After resewing carefully and ironing each strip as it was sewn it was transformed and looked just like a bought one.0 -

Happy New Year Old Stylers.
I have a cutting board, a rotary cutter, a patchwork ruler but no idea how to go about creating a simple patchwork 'something':o .
Would some kind soul put me out of my misery and tell me what to do! Please be warned I am not a natural needlewoman and I am likely to have further questions.
Thanks in anticipation

hi - I have been making patchwork as long as i can remember! i used to use the 'english' papers method but have graduated to using rotary cutting techniques now. It really depends what you want to make. Here are a couple of links but i would suggest for a beginner to start by buying a magazine such as popular patchwork or patchwork and quilting as these have lots of smaller projects in and easy to follow instructions. you may have to search to find them though. a good newsagents usually carries them but you may have to search a bit!
