Okay, don't move the fridge as it doesn't affect walking trajectory around the table much, but then you can have reduced depth units by the alcove, too and bottom, or reduced depth larder.  And include your microwave over there!

I appreciate that the island can't be as long the other way but you can equally make that island 120cm square with four units -
    2x  60cm base
    2x 60cm reduced base
seating overhang towards the french doors side.

That gives you the same amount of storage , better use of space towards the doors *and* more space in the right place around the table.

An average table placed right against the wall with a person sitting at it is going to project around 140cm and you want a metre behind that to walk around - 2.4m in total.  You've got 1.9m there.  Really tight, particularly when you've got more space than you need the other way.   And you cant seat people at the table and the island at the same time.

There's a simple solution to this kitchen that doesn't involve much compromise.

I think that's the best solution. I think moving the dinning table down to the other room might be best option as we could have something similar to this. And then see if we can squeeze some sort of sofa/chair in the kitchen

@Doozergirl if we increased the units in the island how would that work with placement? Having two facing the way they are now and the other two facing out the sides and then have a overhang for two seats?

People usually face them under the overhang to make up the 120cm depth.  You'd have 60cm deep units facing you, 30cm deep units face outwards and then the 30cm overhang.

It's usually for the things that don't get used every single day.   Our own faces the dining table so it contains all our fancier serving stuff.

The island soun around sounds good. To me, the double doors are the bit causing the problem. Is there no way you can keep the window and leave the access in the current kitchen? The double doors are preventing you putting anything there, and creating a pathway diagonally through the room, when there's already a very obvious one in place.

If you leave your window you could put units along that wall too, or at least take them right along the wall where you have then. We put a long window in to help with light. Like this:

Kitchen update! So the microwave ended up in the cupboard next to the sink and the fridge freezer on the end run which we will end up replacing at some point. Absolutely loving it! Before and after.

Haven't got the french doors done yet as funds have run dry for now! 💸
