Disinheritance due to Lottery win

Since winning the SFL Lottery last year I've recently learnt that I'm going to be disinherited from my Grandparent's Will with my share apparently going to my sister along with her current share.
Is this normal practice? Is it fair?
Originally 50% was going to my Uncle and me and my sister getting 25% each of the other 50%. The estate is probably worth approx £230K.
Just looking for thoughts really.

Not fair but unfortunately your Grandparent can do what they want.
You can never really plan on receiving an inheritance. What happens (I know Scottish laws a bit different) if your Grandparent becomes ill and needs to fund residential care for a decade?
I don't know how much you won but make it work for you and invest wisely1 -
My thoughts are that it's entirely up to your grandparent's as to what they want to do with their money (and that's also a legal fact if your an independent adult).
Perhaps they feel you don't need the money and others need it more than you? and this has left you feeling upset because that doesn't mean you don't deserve to be treated equally?
It would have been better if they had discussed that with you rather than having you learn it elsewhere.
So my thoughts are they are probably being caring toward your siblings but haven't handled it in the best way by allowing you find out about it through another source.
Congratulations on your good luck2 -
Fair is entirely subjective, in some ways no as they are treating you differently, in some ways yes as they are somewhat balancing out finances. You are either going to get £120k or £3.6 million depending on if you got the one year or for life win. If it were the first I would think it were perhaps not fair, but at the same time I can see why your grandparents might have chosen to do it, if you have won the latter I would think it would be entirely reasonable, although I would expect them to have explained their reasoning first.
Either way, you are being unreasonable for feeling entitled to inheritance, if they end up going into care then there is a reasonable chance that no one will end up with anything.0 -
It doesn't matter if it's fair or not.
It's their money to dispose of as they wish.
And there's no inheritance until someone dies.
It's possible that your grandad will need to go into a care home and most of that estate may be swallowed up in fees.6 -

Personally if I had won £10k a month for thirty years probably wouldn’t be thinking about a potential £55k inheritance when my grandparents died. I don’t see why you would need this money?6

What’s the SFL lottery and how much did you win?0

Seems rather fair to me.
Much more fair to do this based on you winning a lottery rather than gramp having a dislike for the person you married or that you didn't name any of your 10 children after him or any of the other much more personal reasons some think up.
Unless of course you are being very generous yourself with your winnings and are buying presents for sis, paying some of her bills etc.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Their will, their choice.
However, I do understand that it doesn't feel very fair when you are excluded just because you don't "need" it.
Congratulations by the way. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)1
