I'll avoid the use of any potentially contentious terminology and simply sat that DWP can and do chase debts which are far more than 6 years old.

Because I thought it was paid off lime I said but then 15 years later I get a convincing letter saying I still owed money yet panic set in and started to pay the rest of the aledged sum however someone said it could be a scam and often there is loads associated with HMRC and DWP and now they are still claiming I owe them.

If I do I'll pay it but how can I get evidence I didn't pay it off , why can't they produce something showing me that way back in 1998 there is still an outstanding sum left with dates and balances , surely they have this to make this claim in the first place ?

Sorry quote function isn't working for me .

    What was the debt for?
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Also, how much was the original debt and how much are the DWP stating you still owe?

Also what the OP will need is how the DWP  can chase the debt.

Threatening court action, when none can be taken is  shyster tactics.

If nothing else has happened in the meantime DWP can recover any debt by deductions from the State Pension when it is put into payment.

Yes benefits and even wages, so at some point if the DWP keep chasing they will get the money, That's how the letter should read, giving actions they can lawfully take, not actions that they lawfully can not take.
