Would it not have been much easier to ignore the coin star machine altogether and just have given the “pocket full” of change to the cashier?
Checkout operators must love you if you present them with £12.97 + percentage charged .Plus you don't no the makeup of the loose change it could be 1p and 2p 😊
At least if it was payed into a bank in proper money bags the cashier only has to weigh it
I used to do it at the self service checkouts all the time. Of course, that was before I stopped using cash and it was easier back then because M&S had a bucket type collector that you just dropped the coins into but they’ve since changed it to a slot where you have to put in one coin at a time.

Would still never use a coin star machine though. Before self service and I had to pay in cash, I just counted out, say, £4 in coins before I got to the checkout and handed that to the cashier. Would never have given them more than maybe 40 coins at a time but in those days, they were usually glad to get the change.
I'm not familiar with M&S setup but in my local Tesco/Sainsburys superstores if you lift the coin slot up it's hinged and allow you to pour/feed in coins - not quite as quick as the Coinstar machine but a darned sight cheaper
  • It would have taken a long time to collect what was probably £15 in small change.  Next time make yourself feel better by simply putting those pennies in a charity collection box

When I have lots of change I use the self service tills and feed it into them.

I've been asked not to do this a couple of times in Tesco, "these machines are not built to take that much small change"!

Both times I'd put less than £1 in small change in (not all coppers!).... thankfully much more convenient these days to use contactless but on the odd occasion I'll still get rid of some change in them. I've just learned to do it more slowly so the machine can keep up  :)

I paid for an £8 shop in Tesco with 5p coins using self service machine. I did have a few 10p and 20ps but it was mostly 5ps. Didn't have any issues.

I thought this was the whole ooint of using the machine as you could use the voucher off your shopping.

I went to my local Sainsburys yesterday knowing they had a coinstar machine for depositing your small change to get a voucher redeemed against your shopping. I knew there'd be a charge - but I was ok with that as it converted my heavy pocket of change into money off my shopping. I popped the coins in, and a voucher was duly printed with a total of £12.97 on it - with the message that I could redeem it at any checkout off my shopping bill.

Went off did my shop, got to the till, and the cashier said 'Oh sorry we can't deduct that from your shopping - you can only take it to customer service and they'll give you the cash back'. This of course meant that with a voucher for £12.97 I was going to walk out with a chunk of change in my pocket that I'd just paid a fee to convert into a voucher off my shopping. The customer service lady sympathised but said she couldn't help. I then came home and emailed Sainsburys  to say how annoyed I was at going into the branch, changing my coins, getting charged (which would have been fine if the voucher had worked as it should) and then ended up coming back out with a pocketful of change. They seemed very nonchalant in their reply with a very generic response. So I'll be emptying my nectar card and going off to A N Other supermarket in future.

Sometimes it's the little things that matter.

Hi, given what it says on this receipt, I'd complain to Sainsbury's. In writing. Nothing to do with Coinstar. The assistant should have accepted that voucher at the checkout. According to the crystal clear instructions there, in black and white.

I'd have been tempted to stay at that checkout desk and ask for the cashier to call a manager. The people in the queue would have had to wait, I've often had to wait in the past while people sorted out their bill, packed their shopping, etc. (Pre-covid though, as I'm still having home deliveries of groceries. Coincidentally, from Sainos.)

It's Sainos fault and they should instruct their staff properly.

Or is it Coinstars fault for printing incorrect instructions on the voucher?
