I've been with RWG less than a year and I've topped up via a Now Mobile vouchers purchased from Tesco.
I'm on their monthly plan and asked them to take the monthly £6 (recently reduced to £5) from my account each month. The balance of calls and texts resets each month but on two or three occasions now I've noticed them not reducing my balance until I emailed to remind them!1 -
As I understand it the op is looking for a hands-off system so the friend can just use the phone without worrying about their bundle renewing. So the simplest way would be a recurring card payment, so long as they don't close the card account. My concern with rwg is that someone who is blind might have difficulty finding out if their bundle has renewed (until they ran out of credit and couldn't make outgoing calls) because of the sms based balance checking.1

The information on rwg's website doesn't make it clear that balance details are texted back; How do I check my balance?Just dial *669# from your phone to get your latest credit balance. This does not include your current bundle allowances. To check your bundle allowance please send a SMS to 669 with "info" followed by a space followed by the bundle code which can be found on the rates and plans page here.0

Thanks for all the helpful replies.
Yes, we'll need to check that he can read the text with remaining bundle balance. His phone has rather limited screen content because it uses speech instead. There's no problem with reading or writing ordinary texts though.
Will he be able to check his account online to verify that the bundle has renewed?0 -
Sadly the online presence is, or at least when I last looked was, a bit rubbish.
Checking the bundle is active and not used up should be simple enough. I copy and paste the message info rwg etc to the sms and it replies as a push notification which has the option to save and can then be viewed in the messages app. So if he can access a normal sms he should be fine as long as he can select save when the notification appears. In theory there is no need for him to have a credit balance unless he is using more data or calling international numbers, but it may be harder for him to view a balance if he has one.
It may be possible to hear the balance by calling the host network nowmobile.
Just checked and calling 669, pressing 1 for English and again to confirm they then read your balance out to you.
Called again and it read the balance out straightaway, having saved the language option from before.1 -

Well, I had to contact RWG and ask them to do the recurring monthly bundle in an email. You can't really do anything much on RWG's site. I'm not confident about anything really.
The fact is I'm off to 1p mobile now - I mean look at RWG's website and look at 1p Mobile's site1 -
Like you said eairler,im on the £15 free bundle, and wanted extra data while on holiday in wales,i texted the code uk12rwg, it was added straight away. I added the bundle on the 23rd april.
I had used 2gb by the 25th april, which happend to be when my free bundle renewed. They renewed both bundles,so i got the 2gb back, and as of now they have not taken the £10 for the bundle.
I will of course be emailing them before the month is up to not renew bundle, and to take the £10 if they havent done so by then.0 -
I think the issue is that texts to 669 go to nowmobile (who provide the connection) and aren't necessarily communicated to rwg (who take the money off us). It is far from ideal and I find it hard to see how the partnership works for either party unless rwg are bringing something else to the party (beyond their Welsh mobile masts).1
