  • I do have a waybill number for the return
  • Excellent. Thinking back to last time we had to do this at work, you are going to have to pay DHL unless you can get the shipper to pay them on your behalf. Ifthe shipper will then job done. If they won't then the next thing you'll need is the SAD3 entries for both the import and the export wich DHL will provide. Approach HMRC and they should refund you the money. It isa pain in the backside but if the shipper won't pay then this might be the only way to get around it.
  • Many thanks, I will do as suggested.

In the OP's case they presumably wouldnt have had such details to be able to advise in advance
For the record.. DHL had both my email and phone number from the beginning.. from when the parcel was initially handed over by the sender at a DHL office in the US.. and it was clearly written on the customs forms that accompanied the parcel.
How did the sender have your name, correct address, email address and phone number?

I'm not entirely sure but I work within a relatively small world in which I'm well known. Any one of a number of specialist antique dealers around the world or fellow collectors could have supplied them with my details.
  • Thanks everybody for your comments and advice.. much appreciated. I think I now have a fairly good idea of how to proceed.

  • Bit late to the party, but I don't understand why you've already let the sender off the hook by returning the item.
In your shoes I'd be telling the sender that they needed to pay the DHL charge in full, on your behalf, plus your reasonable costs, and once done so you would allow them to arrange for the return of the parcel at their own expense. If they felt that the DHL charge was incorrect they could argue that themselves with DHL, and if successful you'd be happy to forward on any refund DHL sent to you.
If they failed to do so you'd sell the item, for a reasonable price, pay the DHL charge in full, deduct your own reasonable expenses, and pay them the remaining balance.
