My experience is the same as pretty much everyone else here. We had a train track at the bottom of our road and the noise didn't even register after a week; we stayed there for over ten years.
In fact one time some friends were over and asked whether the train noise bothered us - for a brief moment my girlfriend and I just looked at each other blankly, we had both genuinely forgotten the train line was even there...

We used to live 200 metres from a steam train line. Only heard it on a weekend morning when the whistle went.
We live on a valley side (so does SIL) even though we are further away we hear the train more often but even then you hardly notice it.
I think it depends on the route you live on, how busy it is and if used for freight.
The one near us is a major route but we get few trains on it compared to a more local line and we don't get freight. If you're used to living near a busy road and not near a station or crossing, you'll get used to it quite quickly.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.
  • We agonised for quite a while before buying our home that is 1/3 mile from a motorway AND a railway line, with just a field between them and our house. The amount of noise varies a lot depending on the wind direction. Sometimes you can’t hear anything at all, sometimes it is fairly loud.  But in all honesty, we didn’t need to worry as we stopped noticing it very quickly. The cars that go past in the street are more noticeable.

We lived two large gardens away from a train line for a few years and I really missed it when we moved - there's something comforting about the sound.  Its lovely to see your house from the train when you're coming home too - have you seen The Girl on the Train and the houses in that film with the train track at the bottom.  I think the only time I was mildly disturbed once was when the Flying Banana train went by and only because it wasn't the usual train time - I think quite late or early.

  • Lived 16 years with a railway line at the end of the garden, After a few days never really noticed it. Missed it after we moved though!
  • I work on the railway on a maintenance machine called a tamper. We are loud, we are slow,we vibrate the track. We have an insane amount of people who complain whilst we work and yes most of our work is done in the night.

So I personally would never buy a house next to a railway but as others have said if it's a quiet line/not near access/sidings/crossings then you should be fine for the most part. But there will be occasions where they will be doing work at night that is noisy.

Don’t forget that one day you’ll want to make the selling process as simple as possible.

I think that's now two things we agree on 🥳

I can see mine too, I know what you mean. In fact I travel by train for work and my office is near the train track so I can follow the track route and see my house from the office window

There's a church behind us whose bell chimes every quarter hour.
    Stopped noticing it really quickly.
