House next to train track

  • If the track is welded then the train noise might be smooth like an electric car amplified a lot to be much louder. if the rail track is not welded then it might sound like an angry percussion show. The noise will be worse if trains are breaking or there is a bend in the track (could get some nice squealing noises!)

Are you really sure about there only being trains for 2 hours day?? How did it survive all rounds of rail service cuts?? Does it transport nuclear waste? I believe that is done at night

Personally wouldn't if you are sensitive to noise. I like to live walking distance to  train station but not too close.

    What's the situation/alternatives?

I'd rather live near a train track if it was a detached house than living in a semi with possible neighbour noise. I'd rather live near train tracks than an A road.

There must be something this house has that another doesn't - can you rank the downsides of the train track against the downsides of the other options?

I'd love to live that close to a line with steam trains on it.  Must be lovely to look at!

There aren't that many as it's just when they go up for the service between Fort William and Mallaig but I love the noise they make as they go past. Normal service trains are diesels.

We're close to the West Coast Mainline and we get regular steam trains passing through in the season. I love them. :)

I've lived next to several railway lines, and got used to the noise quite quickly. We did live in one briefly where the line was literally next to the back wall of the house - unfortunately there was a diesel that used to get stopped for a signal around 11.30 at night, and that really vibrated the whole place. Though we even got used to that after a couple of months

My bro has a train line at the end of his back garden, lives on a main road which is part of a London bus route and he has a  Premier League football stadium just round the corner.

My dad used to live above a underground tunnel which you could feel more than you could hear.

People soon learn live with the noise.

I lived next to a mainline for about 4 years never noticed it after a week. Only once did it wake me when they rehammer the sleepers during the night. That is like a earth quake and scared the life out of me!

Apparently there is some sort of equation about sleeping next to a train line, once you live there you cant sleep with out it when you are asleep. Personally it wouldn't bother me too much unless the driver blasts the horn each time but i don't see that happening after 10pm.
  • I love train noise. I hate car noise. Sone people hate no noise.
