House next to train track

Hi 

I found a house i want to buy only thing is its close to train track and train runs between 10pm and midnight every half hour. I am early riser. Can't stand noise during night. But double glaze. 

Am i being too picky?

In your shoes I'd be looking into exactly what runs during the night - the passenger services may end at midnight but there could be freight running all through the night - and the noise from those goes on far longer than passenger trains as they are much longer.

I've stayed in a house that was only around 50 yards form a train line. you could hear the trains going by in the night if you were awake, but it wasn;t loud enoguh to disturb you if you were sleeping.

But it's a very individual thing.

I love the sound of trains at night  but not everyone likes them. I think like lots of noises you get used to them and don't notice them after a while

See if you can arrange a viewing at a time that coincides with a train passing by, and check for yourself how it feels. And, as above, check what kinds of train go at night.

We live by a train track and you barely hear them, I usually notice the 11pm one but only if I'm awake.

Used to live next to a line, got used to it very quickly. Though that was roughly half an hour of silence between trains, and nothing between about midnight and 6am. Certainly more peaceful than, say, living near to a main road. But may be different if it's a more frequent service, or there's freight trains in the middle of the night.

I live under the flight path of East Midlands Airport, I'm told it's the UKs busiest night freight airport. If you listen for them you can hear them if you don't listen you can't

Is the house near the crossing? That would make me think twice.

I lived in a railway station on a main line, just along from the crossing.  You get used to the noise of the trains very quickly, it becomes a background noise, and you miss them if they stop ie trespassers/snow. 

What is difficult is when the Network Rail essential works maintenance people are on the line, and they access it via the crossing.  We did get notice, but the people have to shout over the noise of the machinery which is huge and noisy, especially the track straightening machine, it made the whole house shake.

Where we live, at times around 4-30 am, I am woken up by a screaming jet. This happens for a few days and then stops. However, its been a few months now. But you are correct, if you listen out, you will hear them
