While we're at it let's not forget their and there

Then there's my all time "favourite" ..... "Could of" instead of "could have"

    :rotfl:

that's my personal favourite too. if by favourite, we can mean 'one that causes head/wall interface'.

although bidded sounds all right. what else are we going to say? bade? 'she bade young Lochinvar depart to slay the dragon and not forget to bring her back some dry roasted peanuts and a dandelion and burdock while he wast about it'.

bid may be past tense when you're conjugating your whatsits, but it don't sound right luv due to current common usage. anyhoo have you checked both ain't acceptable? i've been 'corrected' by someone changing what's right to what's wrong before now. unfortunately it's usually a boss and safer to keep the gob shut and nod politely.

mostly the thought that really flagrant horrible misuse of the language will become 'correct' due to popular usage gives me heebie-jeebies. for no good reason as that''s the way language alway has grown and changed. just seems a waste of time, all those years at school learning the 'right' way.

A pet shop local to me relocated and had a massive sign erected outside saying "Rabbit's, Ginnea pig's, Hamster's, Dog's Beds"

It drove me mad for weeks, then they changed Ginnea Pig's to Guinea Pig's and have obviously patted themselves on the back for getting the spelling right and left the apostrophes as they are. :rotfl:

The best part is the sign isn't hand written - it's been done by a signwriter

i have to walk fast past those signs to stop myself going in and saying something. i don't want to be someone who corrects other people's language usage.

it makes my heart rate go up though. those people are probably responsible for a lot of cardiovascular problems: why shouldn't we go in and lecture them?

I....... can't stand........ people........... who type......... like............ this.

No offence, it just touches a nerve with me and makes me wonder just why they need so many dots in their posts.

Oh, And Capitalising Every Word Makes It Difficult To Read (And Type, Actually), My Brain Pauses After Each Word And I Can't Speed Read It At All.

    I don't mean to offend anyone :o

Some forums have a CAPS LOCK filter on, which means posts solely make in capitals transform - this makes the words lower case except the initial letter.
These forums (vBulletin) are such forums, but this function has to be enabled.
It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.

Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.
  • I've got one!

    'mangers' instead of 'managers'

Honestly, what planet do you have to be on to think the two words sound similar?

    Ok, I have 2 more.

Firstly, there is no such animal as a Hampster. Even when our local petshop advertises "Hampster Cages" outside....

Secondly, the correct spelling of the word "sense" is "sense", not as some love to type "sence"

Finally, I quote for you a post from my local freecycle:
Wonted, coler TV becus ours blewed up.

  • The incorrect use of borrow and lend.

There, their, they're (and who's and whose).

Could of instead of could have.

The difference between advice and advise (and device and devise)

It's and its (those lovely apostrophes again)

Probably (prolly) loads more... I'll go and rant now whilst thinking of other, even more annoying mistakes!
