I bought my 'All in one Desktop' back in the spring, and about once a month it restarts itself whilst in use.  Is this caused by a program running in the background?  The only program I'm using directly using is Avast Browser.  Here's a snapshot of the processes which use the highest CPU although there are others. I've also included the spec.

Try using this from ms and it may help you find what is wrong.

If you're going to allow MS to take over your computer make sure it is MS

Does it say its restarting, Blue Screen or just go instantly off ?

    Is it a 24/7 on machine ?

If it is once per month or thereabouts it may have something to do with Windows updates which appear around the end of the first week of the month. You would normally expect to get asked before there is a restart. Worth checking these settings.

WU does usually display a message for a few minutes before restarting, including an option to cancel the restart.

Event viewer is nothing to do with taking over a computer.

Event viewer contains the internal system event logs and is to go-to tool for diagnostics with Windows computers and is an excellent suggestion.

Unfortunately it is tricky to understand the logs but the OP should come back with details of errors and warnings occurring at the time of the sudden reboot in the system and application logs for more advice.

If the cycle is it rebooting in the second week of every month around the Tuesday or Wednesday then it could well be Windows Update.

This article may be of use about how to set active hours to avoid automated reboots when you typically are using the device.

  • Unfortunately my Windows event log was disengaged so I can't see it.  It's quite possible I switched it off a few weeks ago myself when trying to disengage unnecessary programs to fix this very problem, but I can't remember for sure.  I've switched it to automatic now.

Coincidentally my computer restarted again today after I posted the OP!

It always happens when I'm in the middle of something.  I switch the computer off at night.

You should still be able to find previous events from a while ago unless you cleared the event logs:

    These will help you:

    Event ID:

41 - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Confirms the shutdown was unexpected ie not asked for by software or user

6008 - The previous system shutdown at 20:40:29 on ‎05/‎11/‎2022 was unexpected...
Will tell to the time it occurred to help you see what happened just before

If it is hardware related you may see nothing around the time of the shutdown but it is still useful because you can now troubleshoot hardware

In the above example I found this on my laptop for example - power source change, my battery was knackered at the time and when I unplugged the external power supply it just powered off:

Not saying you will see exactly like this, just an example of doing the diagnostics.

EDIT: Added this to help you find the events you need:

I seem to get hundreds of these errors in pairs.  I doubt if it's anything to do with the restart though?  If it restarts again I'll make a note of the time and try to find the error code.

DCOM got error 1068 attempting to start the service cdpsvc with arguments unavailable    Event ID 10005
The Connected device platform service depends of the network connection broker service which failed to start Event ID 7001
