The talex database is considered by some to be amongst the best. The tomtom is weak at alerting you to speed cameras and the databases (pocketgps and tomtom which both cost money) can be poor. This also sits unobtrusively on the dash and slips off the magnetic mount/non-slip mat and into your pocket (although annoyingly this unit has a few extra milimetres on the bottom to accomodate some sort of sliding mount, like those windscreen sucker thingies.)

The free updates now make this seem a good deal. We can only hope that free doesn't mean the quality of the updates is any worse.
  • But is the new one advertised last Sunday on the Aldi site and called GPS Rider ( I'm assuming they are the same inside) a better buy than the Talex Lite which costs extra for the updating cable ?
As I said the build quality on the older one seems good haven't seen this new one up close.

p.s. Of course if you don't worry about the updates you don't need the cable. :p

From what I have been told by NOVUS they are using the same people to locate the Speedcams (ex traffic cops) and all authorised positions as posted on the websites of local authorities. The only Thing that is any different is frequency... Talex would sometimes update 2-4 times a week whereas for the first few months (MARCH) it will be monthly updates then weekly after that.

Looking at the re-upped talex site there seems to be confusion about whether Talex and Talex lite updates will now be free. The mention of them has been removed from the Novus site. I have used the form on the Talex site to ask them about this, and pointed out that going back on the promise won't exactly make for happy customers.
The downloading of location updates and the ability to purchase subscriptions is our primary focus and as soon as they are available the links will appear on this page.
  • May I ask a question about Aldi returns ?

It says "We are happy to replace or refund any item you buy from us as long as you return within 30 days of purchase with a receipt in original and undamaged packaging complete with all accessories".

My question is if there is a seal on the box and you slit it with a knife to open the box does that invalidate your right to return it ?

Also if the one you get that was in those glass locked cabinets is different from the one advertised in their flier can you go back and ask for the one advertised if you so wish ?

    Thanks.

There was no seal on the box on mine, but you could tell it hadn't been touched. I took mine back after the menu button broke the same day I got it and they didn't even ask to see the receipt or bother looking inside the box. If I didn't have morals I'd go back and replace the contents with something else, lol. They were also eager to say if I had any further problems they'd happily give a refund.

They didn't have any on display at all when I got one, I asked for one and they went out the back and luckily it was a Novus. I would definitely be expecting the same model as the one advertised.
  • Ok thanks.

Just so you are aware there has been a long standing dispute at Talex between the 2 directors resulting in the sale of the company after it was placed into administration owing thousands of pounds. The database at Talex was the first to suffer and all the survey team quit (all ex coppers). This has meant the data has not been updated for months. Some parts of the country have not been checked for over twleve months. £59.99 is not good value when you look at the data support because without it anyting else is just eye candy for the dashboard.
I am aware that some Talex Lite owners are considering taking action via trading standards because of the database issue. To be honest I dont see it being resolved it will just get more messy. The free updates link was just a ploy to steal Talex customers and get then over to Novus. The only people who will lose out will be those who buy thinking they are getting a quality product. I would encourage people to return the products to Aldi explaining why they are being returned. I know that Aldi were told of the problems.
