GPS Speed Camera Alert System (new TALEX) £59.99

I have just purchased the aldi one, my reasoning is that I have also just purchased a Citroen Dispatch and Citroen are offering 3 years Smartnav, 3 years Dynamic traffic information, and 3 years Trackstar (vehicle tracking) as part of the package but only 1 month speed alert.
I could subscribe to the speed alert package at £109.00p  per year so i could spend £327.00 for 3 year coverage or £59.99 for more than 3 year coverage (maybe) I didn't need to get my calculator out to work out what was the better deal
I'll more than likely change the van at 3 years so can live with the limited navigation from smartnav for then and transfer the GPS Rider to the next vehicle.;)Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
Just bought the most recent unit at ALDI. Build quality is noticeably poorer, the switches are poor quality, the menu button even broke on my first unit which ALDI happily replaced. Box says 3 years warranty manual says 2 and manual is poorly written and doesn't explain the menu options or the bt/on power switch position. The led's either side are interesting, they turn red near the camera but in my opinion should turn red if going over the speed which they don't. In battery mode it automatically goes into power saving mode which requires 2 quick presses of the menu button to turn off. Each time the menu button is pressed it waits for another press which slows those features down. One undocumented feature is to hold and press menu for 24 or 12 hour clock. All in all a good unit with some short comings. I hope a future firmware update makes the led's red when speeding rather than when the risk of being photo'd is at it's most.0

Can anybody tell me what this unit warns... Is it only the cameras or is it schools, sharp bends, dangerous junctions like the FULL TALEX0

Hi Scooter. Just driven a long run with it from Newport, Wales to Leeds, mostly motorways. Doesn't seem to mention Schools, I got a "Warning, accident black spot ahead" prior to a junction my girlfriend said there's been a number of accidents at, so I presume it warns of sharp bends, but being mostly on the Motorways it hasn't really had much of an opportunity to mention them. On the M42 through the traffic management section, it gave a generic announcement something like "Safety camera enforcement area ahead" but I suppose an announcement for every camera on that stretch, especially when the speed limit can change, would be quite annoying.
Warns of normal fixed and potential mobile areas. The LED's are somewhat distracting while driving at night, particularly if they reflect off the windscreen (I have put the unit in either the coin box or in front of the instrument panel).
Menu gives max speed, distance travelled and I think average speed, and number of satellites. It does not give GPS co-ordinates (which doesn't bother me anyway).
I'm glad I sold the Talex full fat and got this for the battery more than anything, no cable and no power sapping from the car.0 -
How long does the battery last ?
Also does it come with a cable so you can update via your comp ?
Thanks.
p.s. I got the Talex Lite from Aldi, the build quality seems quite good but there is no cable for updating and it plugs into the cig lighter.0 -
Manual claims 9-10 hours in power saving mode (which it is automatically in when in battery only mode - simply means display only comes on when there's an alert) and 5-6 hours with the display on all the time.
Comes with car cig lighter socket - claims to charge fully in 1 hour 10 mins and comes with a spare fuse.
Also comes with the update cable (confusingly the manual says otherwise). Claimed charging time is 2 hours 20 minutes with the USB cable.
The GPS mount is now plain black which I think is good, as the other with GPS in white and a picture of a satellite made it look too much like something worth nicking might be in the car.0 -
Many thanks.
Not keen on paying almost £20 with delivery charge for an updating USB cable for my one.0 -
Not being funny but why get this when you could get a satnav for a similar price and install the speed camera warnings on it? You would have the speed alert plus something that takes you from A to B.Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

Evening
I have the Talex from aldi ive had it for over 2 years! I have to say that its is 100% better then the alerts on my tom tom. It only warns you of cameras that are in your direction, so no false alarms warning you of cameras that ment for traffic going in the oppersit direction.!
Nice basic clear display. i have not updated it ( i dont have the cable!) but for the first time in 40,000 miles it failed to located a new camera! so i pressed the right hand button and it saves the location . iits good value for money id say!
merry crimbo!0
