Looking for a Torque Convertor Auto - motability car

BMW and JLR vehicles will have torque converter auto gearboxes
But they are not motability compatible

You will find BMWs on motability  (although a high advance payment I'm afraid),  along with Mini,  which also use TC transmissions.
But seriously,  don't discount modern CVT transmissions.
One of the best cars out there currently is a Toyota Yaris -  super reliable with a beautiful CVT transmission.  Take a look at the Honest John website https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/146281/what-small-car-has-the-best-auto-gearbox- .  You'll find the Yaris recommended over and over.

Is the corolla the same mechanics - gearbox wise ?
I need space for a mobility scooter
The Corollas are all hybrids now, I believe, and are pretty much the same as the Prius underneath.  Gearbox will be a combination of electric motor and CVT.  Would you be able to get on with that?

Possibly - test drive due I think

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.
  • I drive a Lexus hybrid which has the same sort of transmission as do all the Toyota and Lexus hybrids. It does take a little getting used to, principally because the engine rpm varies independently of the road speed. Added to that it will quite often be running on the electric motor with engine stopped.
Initially you find yourself asking "What's it doing now?" but you soon get over that and just drive it. I prefer it to a gearbox with a number of different gear ratios because it really is seamless.

I have a 2.0 Corolla sports tourer. After driving manual vehicles of all sizes for 40 years, I love the Corolla and it’s CVT gearbox

When you look at Toyota motabilty cars - at first, it seems that the CHR is the only car available
Even when you go further - it is extremely hard to even see Corolla on the list
https://www.toyota.co.uk/motability-scheme has links on it to a price list
They are REALLY pushing the CHR though - wonder why ?
I assume that the CHR automatic uses the same CVT box ?
The only CHR that comes under Motability is the basic "Icon" model - which comes with very few add ons
I really don't know what to do
    Any advice - please

  • And its a real shame that you cannot select a car priced at over £30k even if you add a part ex
They are going to have to increase this limit - since new car prices are going through the roof

The CHR comes with the same options of hybrid power, the 1.8 and the 2.0 and both have the CVT gearbox.

The CHR Icon is only available with the 1.8 though.

The Corolla is on Toyota Motability price list.

Seems they have most of the Corolla range on the list.

even the Icon spec is pretty good, much better than most base model specs

I have had a CHR ( top spec)  when my corolla has been in for a service. it does have the same CVT box and drives very much like a corolla but you sit higher, i was surprised at how small the boot is on a CHR though

From memory I doubt it. Unless it comes apart

best to take it along to a Toyota dealer and give it a try,
  • Is the Toyota CVT box - like the Honda Civic box of 15 years ago - ie) Rubber band linking engine to drive
Super smooth - but no relation at all between speed and engine revs ?
    If so - not interested
