The switch is on. But surely it should only come on at the times it is set to?
Is the timer definitely for the immersion heater rather than gas heated water (e.g. is it the same timer unit used for gas heating)?

Often with gas heated hot water, a non timed immersion heater is also fitted, mainly for emergency use.

Good point, my immersion has no timer just an on/off switch, the timer is for my gas boiler/hot water.

I use around 0.5 kwh overnight between midnight and 7 am.
    Similar here.
A quick look shows recent usage  0.35 - 0.45kWh between midnight & 07.00. (2 fridge freezers + small chest freezer, 2 smart TVs, Sky+ boxes on standby & router all night)
OP’s overnight use looks huge in comparison, suggesting some heating going on?

I’m not good on how immersions work with a gas boiler too - we don’t have that.with ours, we simply leave the main switch - linked into our Economy 7 circuit - on, and the heater automatically heats overnight.

That makes more sense. I’ll try having the immersion off and using the gas heated water for a period and see how it goes.

Something is using 4kwh at night that can only be heating or a very inefficient fridge freezer.
why not switch it off completely tonight and see what happens, do you have hot water in the morning?
Do you have a fish tank or anything like that that could consume power?
Usually don’t need hot water in a morning as the shower is electric. I’ll turn the immersion off and see if it makes a difference, have a feeling it’s the culprit as it does make a noise at night.

It will depend on your set up exactly, but with a hot water cylinder and system boiler you set the boiler controller to heat the water tank. Modern cylinders have very good heat retention, most only need the tank heated once or twice a day.

The cylinder often has a separate electric immersion heater that will be simple on or off switch near the cylinder. These are designed to be used as a back up to the gas water heating, not normally for every day use.  If yours has been on then it will be maintaining the water temperature 24/7.  It would certainly explain high electricity use!

The above all assumes that your set up is a gas system boiler and unvented hot water cylinder.
