Is my usage higher than it should be?

Just to be clear, are you saying you have gas heated hot water but use an electric shower? If so that won't be helping with your electricity usage as electric showers seem to be fairly power hungry.LiamBucknall said:

We set our heating and water on the dash under the boiler. It’s a pretty old system so can only set in 30 min intervals, so water has to be on 30 mins or not at all. Yes to electric shower too, but only 5-6 minute showers.GrumpyDil said:

Nothing left on standby. Only fridge freezer internet and an extension cable upstairs we leave plugged in. Even still, I don’t think standby appliances would contribute a huge amount of energy would they? Especially not enough to hit 10-12kwh a day.wild666 said:Are you leaving appliances in standby mode? There are only three appliances that should be left on 24/7 and they are the fridge, freezer and router.0 -
Could be an inefficient fridge freezer. Two 6 min showers could be 2kwh. It all adds up.0

If it’s higher than what I think I’m using could this be down to a faulty appliance, meter? Feel very confused how it’s so high for how conscious I am about usage. CheersMikeJXE said:According to average 2,800 ish you are high at 365 x 10 = 3,650
I'm sure others on here will give you a better idea0 -
Fridge freezer says it uses 0.53kwh a day, has an energy rating of A+ apparently. I didn’t realise showers contributed so much, thanks for the help.Krakkkers said:Could be an inefficient fridge freezer. Two 6 min showers could be 2kwh. It all adds up.0 -
Why use electricity for the shower when you have water heated by gas? It's like paying £5 a litre for petrol when it's £1.50 over the road.0

When you can see the instant current usage for the house, it's fairly easy to track down the culprits.
So you could get a smart meter, or a whole-house energy monitor (eg an Owl or CurrentCost, sometimes councils or libraries can loan these). Then watch the usage as you turn things off, either at the wall or while circuits in your consumer unit (aka "fuse box")1 -

I'm sure others on here will give you a better ideaIt's not all that bad: you can't extrapolate January's consumption rate to continue throughout the year. In the summer the water entering the house will be warmer and the lights will be used less. The electric shower is almost certainly the main culprit. Stop using it and the electricity consumption may well fall below the average of 2900kWh.Check the lightbulbs and replace any tungsten ones with filamentary LEDs that use about a tenth as much. You can always take them with you when you leave !1 -
You don't mention laundry. What temperature do you wash clothes/ bedding at? Do you have a tumble dryer?
