Although if it was me and now more experienced I would have a reserve!!

Reserves are expensive and as a buyer annoy me. I prefer just puting on a start price that is the minimum I require for the item, it is transparent and as long as its reasonable (market research will tell you) you should sell. The downside of course is it reduces the chances of a bidding war unless you get an early bid.

Yes me too! but it would save you losing out! what other way is there? the seller would have lost out on fees but wouldn't have been much! She should have started the listing at £50! it doesn't make sense starting something at 99p when you have a buy it now for £125

I think some sellers misunderstand about the BIN price. There are always questions on the alt ebay boards from sellers asking where their BIN has gone once they get a bidder in, they seem to think that the BIN remains even if someone bids the minimum amount.

If you do a quick look through tickets on ebay there are lots of people with 99p starting prices and £100 BINs with no reserves, I once bid on some tickets and of course my bid showed at 99p and knocked out the bIN. I then got a shirty mail from the seller threatening to report me to ebay for auction interference unless I withdrew my bid and put his BIN back...and that wasn't a newbie seller either!

It does if you look at it this way.

With a 99p start, and a BIN that dissappears as soon as the first bid is placed, anyone considering the BIN knows that it won't be very long before someone bids the 99p and knocks out any chance they had of Buying It Now .... Thus, they have a decision to make, and make fast. ;)

Having used the above technique previously and selectively, that's my opinon anyway. :D

I hadn't thought of it that way Tojo, it certainly makes sense as a ploy to get bids in.

I buy in certain categories where BINs are often used and instead of watching an item to snipe later I will always bid as soon as I see an item I want so that I knock out the BIN and put a marker on the item for myself. Hmm, so really the seller has pushed me into bidding early which is very clever!

I don't agree with not sending goods if they haven't made as much as you would like. I think the seller in the OP's post is in the wrong. I have just sold a pair of trainers for £11, when I know that similar have gone for £25-30. But it's my mistake for not starting it higher and there's no way I wouldn't send the goods. Thinking about it, my buyer sent his cheque to me really fast so maybe he was worried that I would tell him they're no longer for sale!

Some folk will just knock out the BIN for the hell of it :p but as long as I get even one BIN out of many, it makes it commercially viable.

I used the above ploy with some masonic Jewels. I listed some of the more common ones and pointed out in my auction (more than once :p) that I had a whole collection... ;)... As expected during the auctions I had a whole heap of emails asking about the others yet to be listed ;) and I just responded by advising that I would be only too happy to Email them when listing more. :)

Some folk even subsequently emailed lists of "wants" which made it easy to identify which jewels were most in demand. :)

From there it was a case of watching Jewels that I had where bidding wars broke out involving buyers I had been contacted by and others (it's a small community) .... Advising buyer exactly when I was going to list "some items" ..... pitching the BIN's at a tad over the inflated bidding war prices, and waiting for a bite. :p

I'm involved in an auction at the moment 99p opening bid £150 BIN. Bid £10 just to stake my claim and the seller has cancelled my bid and relisted the item to get his BIN back.

It's really irritating and I don't know whether to bid again and knock out the BIN once more (the BIN is too high for what he is selling) or email the seller and explain why his BIN keeps disappearing, or should I just walk away?

Incidentally this is a time limited auction and due the relisting now finishes in the early hours of tomorrow morning on a 1 day auction.

Well.... I really cannot be done with that sort of seller.

That said, I would certainly bid £10 and a bit again , however, I'd also email the seller advising..... "I noticed you cancelled my proxy bid. Please note that whilst the opening bid only shows as 99p, my Proxy bid is far, far, higher".... This will possibly result in one of three things happening.....

    1. Bid being cancelled.
    2. Bid not being cancelled.
    3. Your proxy bid being nibbled up. ;)

    1. and 2. I could live with........ No 3. I'd investigate. :)

I've used a different user id this time and have put in a starting bid of 99p but also a second proxy bid that is higher on the same ID (I'm not trying to do anything against ebay terms and conditions here). So although the current bid is still showing as 99p the seller wll now have to cancel 2 bids to get rid of me.
