Flights, seat not included in price

I am new to domestic and or cheap airline flying.
Why are airlines allowed to display prices Flight available from £125 and then when you go to book the flight they charge you extra for a seat!
I mean everyone by law requires a seat on a plane, if they want to let me fly standing in the aisle (LOL) I probably could understand this practice. But surely this should not be lawful to say Prices from £125 and then add extra for a seat.
EDIT it is Logan Air

UPDATE FROM OP
I turned up about 25mins before checkin closed, just asked nicely if they could move me to a window seat, she put me on an empty row by the window, just in front of the wing so it was all good.

I might be wrong but I think charges for seats are usually for extra legroom or exit row seats, generally not your big standard seat. Which airline are we talking about here?0

I fly regularly and always have an option to book a flight with a randomly allocated seat, or pay extra to choose my seat. Thinking of the airlines I regularly use, perhaps Easyjet might be the one that catches a novice booker out as it shows the seat plans with different prices and suggests you take the option of pre booking, but if you go to the top of the page you can continue with doing so and without further charge. However, Easyjet do that for all the options, including baggage, insurance etc so if you are seeing it just for seats it can’t be that.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. They want you to book seats so you’re guaranteed to be sat with the person/people you’re travelling with. It’s a money making scam. I always refuse to pay and I’ve never been separated from who I fly with.0

Hi OP
You can often book seats with extra legroom and seats as a friend/family unit and they cost extra.
If you arrive early and there are a few of you, you often can get allocated seats together if that is your wish

Apologies, I misread the post! I’ve never heard of that.0

Which airline?
Maybe you've misunderstood the website.
I think it probably means if you want extra legroom, exit seats or want to choose which seats you have, you'll pay extra.
If you don't want to pay, your seats will be allocated by the airline.
You may or may not be sat with traveling companions.
You should check the baggage rules too to make sure you don't have any surprises.1 -

you will still get to sit down in a seat if you do not pay for seat assignment but if you want a specific seat then that is an optional add-on - some airlines may allow you to select your own standard seat for free when online checkin opens, others will issue you a random seat.
same with baggage, basic tickets often include a small piece of hand luggage but if you want a bag in the hold this would be extra
Some ticket types will include free seat assignment and free hold luggage but they will cost more than the basic ticket but if you require these elements it can sometimes be more cost effective to buy the fare that includes them rather than add on the extras to a basic ticket. Important when comparing prices.0 -
