My sister paid in a large CHQ last Thursday and paid the £12 to get it through fast but it still has not turned up and she is getting so worried, at the start she asked what day would it be cleared for and she was told Monday so she has put down a large deposit for a car and they are holding onto the car until 21/12/2007 so we are going out of our mind with worry so any help will be great .
We just don't know how this works and the bank said they don't have the time to talk about it all she would say was its sent just like a normal letter , Where can we go for help

She paid for 'special presentation'. Which gives assurance the cheque will be met. It does not get you the money any more quickly - the cheque still needs to clear.

Her Bank would send it to the drawer Bank (1st class post - possible delay with Christmas mail?) to arrive Friday. The cheque should be cleared funds this coming Thursday (4 days - as the drawer Bank had to put it to their clearing centre Fri night ....effectively restarting the clock, thereby making the means of presentation slower than had her Bank directly processed it !!)

    Bit of detail here :-

Thank you so much i just didn't know how this works i am just worried it has been lost in the post and there is noway the royal mail can find out where this CHQ has gone My sister has all the proof that come with the CHQ and the slip of paper from her bank , I thought it would be posted to a local HSBC bank.
Thank you so much for your help we just cannot sleep .
I hope you will have a great Christmas
  • Where did your sister get the cheque from?

If a decision has not been reached by tomorrow I would ask her bank for a temporary overdraft facility to cover the car payment.
I would also ask that the originator of the cheque stops it and re-issues the funds in the form of a CHAPS payment direct to your account.
You may get charged up to £30 for this as the originator's bank will charge for providing this service.

I agree with Mike in this day and age special presentations is a complete waste of everybody's time.

But the £12 she paid ... should have solicited a phone call (on receipt of the cheque - and checking the funds position) from the drawer Bank .... to her Bank. So her Bank should know whether or not the cheque arrived safely ... and should have given her a number to ring in order to check the position with them. That, in turn, should tell her Bank when cleared funds will be in her account?

As that's (apart from the last sentence) the service she has paid for - she should ring them and they should be able to fit the jigsaw together for her?

If there is a problem prejudicing getting the car - follow the advice in the post immediately above from ejones.

No problem. Get her to 'phone her Bank tomorrow, first. If the other Bank has 'phoned them to confirm the funds are there (little doubt if its Tesco Pensions - so begs the question who erroneously advised her to opt for special presentation?) - then the cheque is in process of being cleared. And her Bank should be able to tell her (it's a max of 4 days now, to clear) - when the funds are going to be in her account.

If the other Bank haven't 'phoned .. then her Bank has taken its eye off the ball as they should have checked that happened. So her Bank should then check - and only then do you assume its missing. So she would need to ring Tesco who will stop the cheque (no cost - if its 'lost') - and ask if they can arrange a CHAPS payment (less their fee - max of £30). CHAPS is an instant form of cleared electronic payment and should be in her account the same day (provided they get it in before around 1430hrs) they send it.

But sounds a bit as though her Bank have some responsibility here (naff advice, if they gave it etc) - so she should ask them for a temporary free overdraft to cover the purchase whilst its all resolved?

    Thanks.

That's the problem with special presentations - it does involve the Royal Mail, and obviously its a busy time. But people don't pluck 'I want to do a special presentation' out of the air, normally - and it absolutely didn't fit your sister's requirement.
So - if Halifax did suggest it get back onto them, particularly as they should know if the other Bank received it timeously. You paid the £12 to be told if the cheque would be honoured. A side effect of that - is knowing the other Bank has received the cheque!

I used a special presentation via Halifax 18 months ago. But that was at my request as it was from a local trader who'd been lying to me - and I needed to know it would be met. But Halifax arranged for me to ring them after lunch the following day - and were able to tell me it would clear satisfactorily. It's that bit - the feedback from the other Bank that seems to be missing here? If Halifax haven't had the feedback - they must get it .... then you'll know where you stand.

    Get onto them tomorrow.

Thanks it means a lot to us my sister said they told her it will be the best way.
Because of all of your kindness i have something to fall back on , so the first thing is phone Halifax then tell them what we want to do if the money is not in the account then phone Tesco pensions before 2.30 pm ,
I just don't want to lose the car.
