Because of all of your kindness i have something to fall back on , so the first thing is phone Halifax then tell them what we want to do if the money is not in the account then phone Tesco pensions before 2.30 pm ,
I just don't want to lose the car.

No ---- not quite. Read my post #8 again.

If the money is on its way to your sister's account (I think it would be there Thu ... assuming Tesco's bank got the cheque last Fri) it would be unwise to ask Tesco to stop the cheque.

I think it better if your sister goes into the Halifax. If they suggested 'special presentation' (which has never been a solution) .... they've contributed to the problem by lack of knowledge. And sending the cheque in the Christmas mail .... is something they did. So they can hardly hold Post Office responsible for a set of circumstances they both advised and initiated. They must (thats what the £12 was for) .... be able to tell you if the cheque arrived at the other Bank - and when. From that they can calculate when cleared money will be in your sisters account?

If that's not in sufficient time - demand a (free) temp overdraft to cover the car purchase until the funds are there. End of story!

Only go for asking Tesco to cancel the cheque / CHAPS the money ....... if the other Bank say the cheque has not been received. And, alongside that, ask Halifax for the overdraft to cover you until the CHAPS is in place.

It was a mistake doing the special presentation in the first place - despite it was done out of a desire for haste. Having done it - trying to abort it and head for the CHAPS route - could equally cost you time you say you don't have. Tesco will not, in a day, agree to cancel the cheque and have a CHAPS payment on it's way. They will seek re-assurance first from both Banks. For the reasons I've outlined all the way through - they will find it difficult to believe anyone did a special presentation on one of their cheques

Best of luck. Trust she has the new car 21st ;)

I was too polite to say that ;)

Trust it's being resolved this morning? Tescos main account (from memory) is a clearing account in London - but no guarantee their Pensions is alongside. If Halifax have sent the cheque, by post, into a London Bank - it will have added a few days (some recent 1st class stuff to my son, in London, has taken 4 days).

Hence my dwelling on pressurising Halifax to give a temp overdraft. They've seen and noted the cheque - so know the proceeds are as good as guaranteed!

If you don't want to lose the car, which I doubt you will, keep them in the loop of what's happening. Namedropping the source of the funds, pointing out the special clearance process (and the Xmas mail flaws) and assuring them it'll be all right on the night will go a long way.

I did strongly suggest you went in - not 'phone. It's too easy to put you off on the 'phone.

You really have to go in (if the 1530hrs call is fruitless) .... and refuse to take 'no' for an answer. I've been assuming your sister asked (last Thu) 'how do I get this money fastest'? If their response was the special presentation - then they're stupid. When you then take the effect of Christmas mail - their solution borders on professional negligence. Therefore push the temporary overdraft. But doing it at distance ... makes it too easy for them to deflect you.

Bear in mind ... had they banked the cheque normally last Thu. You would have had cleared funds in the account yesterday (Tue)! So their alleged advice - has cost you £12 ... and all this hassle. Get your thoughts in order and confront them.

went to the bank they still didn't want to know, asked to speak to a manager still no and they asked why do i keep on phoning i told her you tell me to phone at 2pm 3pm and 4pm and you told my sister to send the CHQ in this way , phoned head office told them how they were with us they phoned them come back and told me they were the same with her , she told her line manager and she told her to put in on the computer and get me to phone head office 3.30pm Thursday then they will phone them.
Tesco cannot send the money by CHAPS it has to be by CHQ but it will take about 3 weeks but Tesco has told there bank to see where this CHQ has gone to but will take 2 days God my sister is in ill health and this is the last thing she needs, But i will not stop until she gets her money.

Who are you buying the car from?
Why does it need to be bought on 21st Dec - what happens if you don't get the money?
Will your sister's bank (or your bank) give you a temporary overdraft to cover the cost of the cheque? (Careful of charges/interest etc)

Speak to Evans Halshaw first thing as soon as they open. Do it calmly. (Your posts are coming across as a bit panicky and I am finding it difficult to understand the situation because of it so i assume others will too ). See whether they will extend the date until Xmas eve or later. There can't be many people wanting the same car.

Don't wind them up because you are worried. Listen to what they say and then post on here for advice.

Write down the situation exactly for the bank (what you are doing, who you spoke to at the bank etc) and take it back into them, just after you have updated us on Evans Halshaw. I wonder if they are finding it difficult to understand as you are obviously very worried about your sister and may not be explaining clearly. See what solutions they can suggest so that the car can be bought.
