That’s a good question. As far as I know some old metres have a day and a night reading as the night usage is cheaper.frugalmacdugal said:Hi,why have you a day/night meter when you also have gas? What is your main heating source? We do have gas too.Hi,the reason for the day/night was usually for electric central heating, that's why I asked what your heating source is.0 -
I’m sorry Matty, I didn’t grasp your question. I apologise too for using pounds and pence. I’m new to the chat and clueless. I could find out but it will take me a while to sift that out of the EDF portal. I shall look in to it and thank you for your tip.Mstty said:
Hi sus100Sus100 said:
Yes it has been going on for the last year. The night metre is stuck so I have provided what is stuck on the night metre. My bill has been at £160 for around 2 years then increased in July 2022 to £384 and then in November I got another bill to say it was going up again, as per my original post.Mstty said:So this has been going on a year?
Even though they are estimating your night use does that match previous years or is it inaccurate?
It is generally not helpful to talk in £'s and pence due to the various tariffs and now the government reduced rates we are now on.
What is important is kwh's used so I will ask my question again.
Do you know in kWh what your previous year(s) usage would have been on your night rate before the night meter stopped recording usage. Then how does that compare to what has been estimated by your energy provider for this past year whilst it has not been recording?0 -
That's ok this board can be a bit intimidating.
Basically energy you use is calculated in kWh a kilowatt hour. The amount of energy you use in one hour.
What you need to do is look historically and calculate how many kWh you used in the night rate of a whole year, ideally a couple of years. (Makes sure bills are actual not estimated reads)You can then compare that to the figure your energy provider has estimated your night usage to be for the past year whilst your meter has not been working.
This will give you your evidence based estimation and some wiggle room if they have over estimated your usage.1 -

I think historically they had storage heaters as a source of heating as we moved 2 out of the loft which had been stored by the previous occupiers. They weee the old style with bricks inside, they weighed a ton. Hence the day/night metre.frugalmacdugal said:Sus100 said:frugalmacdugal said:Hi,why have you a day/night meter when you also have gas? What is your main heating source?

However you get this resolved, you want to get rid of the Economy 7 tariff if you've got gas CH. In my area (East of England), the day rate is now 55p instead of about 35p for single rate tariff. Night rate is 7p. Unless you're using a massive amount of electricity overnight and very little in the daytime, the E7 rates will be costing you a fortune.Make £2026 in 2026

When did you switch over to gas central heating?
Yes both gas and electricity seem high based on those figures you have provided but as you said they are estimates they might as well be pure fiction. What you need is actual readings and bills based on actual readings.

Thank you Slinky for your help. I am only realising now I am being charged for economy 7. Without sounding stupid, I have been so careful with my energy bills since moving in the house and blissfully unaware an old style metre would charge me on EDF thinking I have storage heaters. It has never dawned on me.Slinky said:However you get this resolved, you want to get rid of the Economy 7 tariff if you've got gas CH. I have checked what access I have to old bills on the portal and they only go back so far to the end of 2020 and annual estimates have only been provided at the end of the statement.0 -
Ok this isn't going to be easy.
Would I be right in suggesting you really have not been interested in energy use in kWh and what you use whilst energy prices were low (don't worry a lot of people are like this including us a year ago)
Therefore as long as the monthly amount was ok you didn't check your meters or query bills that were always estimates?0
