@Makingabobor2 - No problem buying tomato plants from someone who has already successfully got them through the finicky stage. Without a heated greenhouse, growing tender veg from seed can be quite a bit of work. I have windowsills full of plant babies until they are strong enough to withstand our cold conservatory & from thence onto unheated greenhouse covered with bottle cloches & bubblewrap. None of it is difficult, but it can be a faff. I find it worth the effort in terms of satisfaction, interest, flavour & food budget though F x
2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!8 -
Just wanted to jump on here and say yes, yes to landcress and mache/lambs lettuce! I'm up in North Yorkshire and both have grown for me up here, under netting (but nothing else) very well all winter. I'm still cutting it - it's made for some delicious salads.
Also - I'm a very novice gardener - I only had one veg bed built last year on a bit of a whim - so am assuming they must be pretty hardy... I seem to have caught the bug a bit now tho'. Am plotting my planting for this year. So far I've got tomatoes, garlic, broad beans, turnips, a couple of different Italian greens and some salad. Oh - and some sweet-peas for the big pots at the back. My mum arrives today, so I am hoping to get some of her input as she is an excellent gardener.8 -
Are there any veg that prefer / could grow in pots in a shadier area rather than sunshine all day? My sunnier areas are already saved for other things, but I do have an area that I could put some pots inMe, DD1 20, DS 18, DD2 15, Debt Free 04/18, Single Mum since 11/198

@slm6002 & @Makingabobor2 - I have really only had watercress in shade, as there is virtually no shade in our veggie plot, but this subject is covered online by G's W - something like '10 best veg for shade". Doubtless other sites & gardening books will cover it too.

All this talk of gardening is making me want to get out there. It's monsoon season at the moment though so no point. My back garden currently resembles Steptoes yard so nothing growing anywhere and not likely to while I still have a chicken causing mayhem. I'm not having any more chickens though so once she is gone to pastures new I will hopefully get gardening. I've got a nice size patio as well so can grow in tubs but not while the chicken is in residence 😂I do have some trough type planters that hang on my fence so might try some lettuce in there. I could grow tomatoes out in the front garden but I stopped when mine kept getting blight 😟Original Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,756 Owed = £10,8747

I grow quite a lot of salad stuff in troughs, @Onebrokelady - lettuces, rocket, spring onions & radishes, mostly, but also pak choi, lamb's lettuce & baby carrots (the little round varieties are good for troughs as they din't require so much depth). Also strawberries.

Berry fruits don't mind some shade - raspberries, gooseberries or blackcurrants for instance, all naturally grow on the edge of woodland. Not deep, dark shade though (it is why neighbours hate 60ft leylandii hedges so much. They literally suck all the nutrients out of the soil and leave a bare, barren wasteland: prejudiced? Moi?)Save £12k in 2026 #2 I have banked £2870.61 so far, against a £10k target The 2026 Save £12k in 2026 thread is here

For the last 2 years I have been very unsuccessful with growing tomatoes. Need to change the variety to maybe a cherry type I have a neighbour 2 doors up from me and hers grow so fully. I'll try some more chillies again along with strawberries and try to keep the damn wood pigeons off them
Chillies were not prolific at all but got chopped and now in the freezer. Need to find a kinder spot for them though. In the mean time I will stick with the rhubarb and my fruit trees along with the free blackberry from over the fence at the bottom of the garden. Anything is better than nothing-check back and see
