I have been waiting for a delivery from DPD for a whole week!

It was expected on Christmas Eve, and today...  Thursday, 30th December 2022, I am still waiting.  Now they are saying "delayed because of an unexpected issue"?

Please, an "unexpected issue"?  Translation:  "stolen" perhaps?

I ordered clothing from Nike on 22nd December and expected delivery on 24th December (Christmas Eve).  I have been calling them constantly to try and get my parcel delivered and so far all I have had is excuse after excuse for nothing but deliberate delays!

I understand that DPD are taking up deliveries from Royal Mail after they went on strike, but that is no excuse for this and lying to customers repeatedly!

I waited 2 weeks before Christmas for a delivery. Daily texts saying its on its way, then delayed.
In the end the retailer recalled the delivery and sent it back out with royal mail. It arrived in a few days then despite their strikes.

  • So not just me then @marcia_...  Thank you, at last, not just me!

We send a lot of parcels out with them at work.

Effectively they are swamped with parcels as companies are switching consignments that would normally go via Royal Mail to them. They are filling all available trucks (the largest ones that do the depot to sorting hub to depot runs, not the local delivery drivers) and then having to stop processing until they have made a round trip to deliver a load to the national hubs and then get reloaded for the return trip.
These reloaded trailers are then sitting full in the local depots as they don’t have enough local drivers to deal with the temporary uplift in parcels….

Everything we have sent has got there, but quite a bit has been 3-7 days rather than the next day with no info on when they will get to the trailer any individual consignment is stuck in.

(They had also pulled a lot of office staff, managers and sales reps into the depots for long days helping to sort the consignments which slows down retailers communication lines when trying to chase things up….)

Hopefully with the Xmas peak out the way it will settle out shortly.

I sympathise with your frustration but you have no consumer rights here.

Any rights, consumer or contractual, are with the senders.

I am aware they are "swamped" but to say delivery is today, then the next day, then the next day and so on is not on!  It's very annoying, and I am unhappy with the shambolic service and shambolic customer service I have received.

As I said, now in contact with "Executive Office" in Nottingham to deal with this whole mess caused by Royal Mail strikes and deliberate delays on DPD's side.

I would have e liked this thread to be turned in to a "DPD issues thread"... that would be nice.

Also, not suggesting anything contractual, I am saying that the fact that DPD are deliberately holding my item could constitute theft in my view.

    It doesn't.

And I don't get the impression any of the other couriers are doing much better at the moment, it's a fairly universal problem due to Royal Mail strikes, shortage of staff, the desire of "moneysavers" not to pay a decent rate for their deliveries, etc.

The problem with courier firms is they are designed to move something from A to B in as quick a time as sold. That relies on the process always moving and being within the volume expected.

When volume surges the process struggles. They have to 'move aside' the volume that got caught up during that period because more packages keep coming. From around the 22nd of December some sites were quoting 6-8 days DPD delivery as they tried to manage the surge - the surge was massive this year, at a time they already had to deal with peak (which was forecast to be lower this year due to the economic outlook (so less resource planned to be in place - with less staff actually able to be recruited)  - its been a proper perfect storm for the couriers this year with the Royal Mail being in such a state).

To get back on track they have to slowly add back in the stuck volume - as and when capacity allows. For example I have a DPD that was due yesterday, was picked up on the 28th and I asked them to bring it today as I wasn't in yesterday.

Its not theft (as the goods aren't yours till delivered) - you can ask the shipper for a refund and refuse  - that is if you aren't desperate for the product ordered.

TBH. The retailers have to take a lot of the blame as this has been a known issue DPD have been sharing with retailers.
The below from a friend who runs a pet shop & sends a lot a raw dog food out, that has to be on next day delivery. So it is clear that at the start of December they had issues, which were not going to get better due to everything else going on.

**Edit*** the list has been removed, this wasn’t meant to be shared with you (so I’m told) the list is quite extensive now, but please feel free private message me to see if your postcode is affected I’m so sorry both otherselfs and DPD UK are doing everything we can right now.
I wish this was a nightmare! Only it’s a living nightmare.
This is the an up to date (ish!) as it’s constantly changing, list of postcodes that are experiencing delays from 1-5 days!

I had a parcel stuck at DPDs depot for a week, contacted Pets At Home who resent a new one which was delivered within. Two days and the stuck one got returned.

Contact the sender, not the courier.
