Hi all, I haven't heard the podcast either but I agree 100% it's about trying to get people to spend money. It's linked to the idea that clothes should be worn for a season then thrown away hence the poor quality of a lot of the stuff. Like MrsCatz I wear what I like and what I think suits me in the colours I like. A long time ago I realised that fashion was not necessarily the way to go for me. What looks stunning on a 5ft 11 but size 10 model just doesn't look good on this 5 ft 4 rounder body
I also realised that if I starved myself down to a size 10 I would look ill, the bones are too big from doing sport in my youth. Also I realised as I didn't earn my living by looking good I need only to be clean and presentable
@PipneyJane sorry I can't recommend a lipstick, it's years since I wore any but I can see that colour looking good on you so maybe try one of the larger stores that carry a few ranges. I am sure if it is colour of the year it won't be long before they start to appear in the shops
Take care everyone4 -
Hello, well it 2 weeks into the new year and no new clothes bought for myself, OH and DD. This is unheard of for me, OH said he needed new socks today so I looked through drawers and found 3 new pairs. He wears 2 pairs for work and averages over 20,000 steps a day and worn until fall apart or the elastic goes.DD second hand Brownie uniform arrived, I ordered last year but only paid for this year.
I'm proud of my progress 😌3 -
PipneyJane said:In the "you couldn't make this stuff up" camp, apparently the Pantone colour of the year is "Viva Magenta".
Seriously? Who gave them the power to dictate these things? This week, my email inbox has been full of emails announcing this, from companies as diverse as knitting magazines and clothing shops where I have an online account. OK, I don’t care a damn what colour is “colour of the year”, but if it makes it harder for me to buy fabric/yarn/clothing/makeup in a colour that suits me, I will be most annoyed.**
Did anyone catch the rant on the BBC about the whole concept of fashion being devised by the industry to part us from our money? I think it was Martin in his most recent podcast, but it may have been the one from the week before. (I was too busy cheering, while washing up to note which episode.)LLM2018 said:Hello. I bought 4 fat quarters in the sale for £1.99 so I have used my first 2 coupons

That’s a good price @LLM2018. You must show us photos of your quilts.

** If anyone can recommend a lipstick in this shade, Please do so. I have been after a good magenta lipstick for ages. (I need a blue-red shade.)I have this is was recommended to my by an aunt who does make up for weddings. (She wanted to get me away from reds!) Its a good shade, it took some getting used to for me, I still prefer my red.3 -
New hat - and coupon-free as it's Shetland Heritage wool by Jamieson & Smith, which I not only bought several years ago, pre-Covid, but bought second-hand from someone offloading their excess, so for £80 I bought one kilogram of cream and 400g of green... it's gorgeous stuff, beautifully soft.
It's a 3-ply, ie heavy-laceweight or very thin 4-ply-weight, but I knitted it on 3.5mm needles and then handwashed it vigorously in alternate hot and cold water to 'full' it down a fair bit, what is often called "felting" (but isn't felting, technically) - fulled knitting is denser, warmer, stronger, albeit a little stiffer, so it's ideal for hats
I used charts of two free-online patterns, 'Woodruff' for the edge-band, which is a sock pattern, and 'Picot Hem Snowflake Hat' for the main part of the hat, and made up my own other bits, Latvian braids in opposite directions, etc...
2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:
January (29): winter boots, green trainers, canvas swimming-shoes (15); t-shirt x2 (8); 3m cotton twill (6);
.
2025 second-hand acquisitions (no coupons): None thus far
.
2025 needlework- *Reverse-couponing*:11 coupons :
January: teddybear-lined velvet jacket (11) & hat (0); velvet sleep-mask (0);10 -

Beautiful hat, Laura! You're very talented.
I'll look out for the item about fashion, it's quite liberating not to feel that pressure to have whatever's new. I love finding things that are NOT in the current trend.
I realised when totting up my 'wardrobe' budget to see how many coupons I'd used, that I actually bought quite a lot of clothes last year. They were almost all second hand so coupon free, but I have got in the habit of popping into the charity shops (eight in my little market town) and browsing and then buying. I really don't need that many tops! So as well as not buying new clothes, I am trying to buy more thoughtfully this year, only getting things I need.
I'm going to winnow out the stuff that seemed like a bargain but actually doesn't get worn, and try and plan for some specific items. I can still enjoy the thrill of the chase, as it were, without having to buy every time. I'm also hoping to make more of my own clothes. I managed one dress last year, not impressive although several Barbie dresses and a stuffed rabbit were produced. The rabbit needs more clothes.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.8 -
Laura - wonderful hat. So much talent I am always amazed. Good job.7

Hello to all,
Spends to report (very early in the year for me).
It's (you guessed it!) another pair of dungarees, but no I haven't got round to selling the others yet LOL
Off to update the signature with my spends.
Colour of the year fascinates me, well colour psychology as a whole fascinates me.
This years colour isn't one that would appeal to me be it for fashion or household items etc, and I definitely wouldn't have predicted it being a pink for this year!
