Santander paying in cheque by app

Unfortunately I've given up trying to use the Santander mobile app for scanning cheques as it never works. Despite happily taking the photos of the front and back, it ALWAYS then goes on to say "Poor image quality". I have a dark background by a window and the amount of light doesn't get any better than this! Poor software is the only conclusion.0

Never had an issue with paying in cheques, has always been printed ones right enough not hand written.0

I think the answer is as posted earlier a black, not blackish or dark, background. I put mine on top of my black tablet case and have no problems, all sorts using anything else.0
