Thank you all for your comments.

@Stuart45 it is a 1950's house so single brick with no cavity wall.
Houses built in the 50's with face brickwork were normally cavity walls.
Because it's Flemish bond it could be mistaken for a solid wall.
  • Thank you both for your comments. I think we may need to start looking at building contractors, I guess we need to get them in at the same time we pull out the windows to do the lintel?

That is interesting @stuart45 I have looked up flemish bond and it is that style but I have measured the depth of the wall and it is only around 230mm thick so does this suggest it is single brink thick? I thought it needed to be at least 270mm thick to be considered a cavity wall?

230mm thick is a solid brick wall, which is unusual for a 50's build.
Builders can take on the whole job, including the windows.

Thanks for the advice, we have had a builder out who is connected to one of the companies quoting us and they have never put a curved lintel into a bay even though have been working in the trade for a number of years. There are lots of houses with bays in our area and they were more worried about the repointing around the bay being addressed as they think it's just a bad job of that which is making it look worse. In their opinion the bay poles will be doing most of the work and the lintel can only be 10cm thick due to the space between the top of the window and where the brickwork starts.

The more we look into this the more opinions we get and it just becomes more confusing as to what the right thing is to do to address it all.
