I bought this DAB for £12 with discount code http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1674863647.1198187810@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfcaddmleemjehcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&sku=920050&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null
when it was posted on this site. Its refurb but works fine! To be honest DAB ok but I would not pay any more for one . It is still on the Currys web site as a new model and now costs - follow the link and see ! http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1602307853.1198187955@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfcaddmleemjehcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=802213&category_oid=

Argos INSTORE ONLY. I picked up an mains/battery Intempo TRS01 in Argos with DAB and FM today - cat no. 500 5677. Online for £29.99 but comes up instore at £19.99 so worth a punt for me for a cheap portable.

Many of Martin Lewis' "grab this, grab that" exhortations are totally misplaced, namely because he is actually saying "grab this, grab that piece of cheap rubbish"

If that's your opinion, then why do you bother reading this forum?

Well what a useful forum it would be then, if run along your lines.

One section has the grabbit cheap without any explanatory or qualifying text.

Somewhere else across MSE, another section runs contributed text which argues for, or argues against, the wisdom of the grabbit recommendations in the other section.

Yeah. Right. That's exactly the way to provide moneysavers with easily accessible, easily comprehended information which will enable them to save their cash rather than waste it. . .

Just because something's cheap doesn't mean it's worth grabbing.

How much is really saved by buying £20sworth of rubbish, whether it's a DAB radio or anything else that happens to rate a mention in grabbit because of price alone??????????????????

You've missed my point. The debate has gone completely off track. i dont have a problem with : is this radio cheaper in the current market than it has been? yes.
or has anyone had any problems with this radio?

but this has turned into dab is rubbish etc etc

I dont think that terrestrial television broadcasts have much to offer and sky is much better, but i dont start slating terrestrial broadcasts when somebody posts about a new lcd tv for 50p. i would offer my opinion on wether or not i had any experiences of that tv or maybe even that brand, not the quality of reception i could get on channel 5 in inverness.

A few weeks ago Tesco had a special offer on DAB converters, that plugged into a conventional FM radio and turned it into a DAB radio. Does anyone know anything about these units, 'cos Tesco seemed to have stopped offering them in their catalogue?
    Happy Christmas everyone:j

It can hardly have gone that far "off track" when posts like #79 appear on this thread. And jefft's at #75 certainly demonstrates the value of keeping a thread like this in this part of the MSE forum rather than consigning it to somewhere else.

As to slating / not slating TV terrestrial v satellite broadcasts, I'm assuming you're referring to the relative content of same. But those posts in this thread about DAB / FM broadcasting weren't about broadcast content, they were about broadcast quality.

We'll obviously agree to differ on this, but I've no time for out-of-context information on a forum explicitly devoted to money saving.

A thread which confined itself merely to saying here's a grabbit, DAB radio at half price, but which then failed to explore the context of that grabbit -- price / value / quality -- serves no purpose at all.

I'd rather listen to medium wave for Five Live than DAB. By the way I've never actually bought a DAB set but I have listened to friends sets and also hear a lot of different models of them at work everyday and none of them sound anything like as good as FM - they all have that horrible metallic sound and that is purely down to the technically inferior MP2 low bitrate transmission that the DAB standard employs.

Have you tried plugging in an aerial for FM? You will need one! DAB doesn't work without it unless you are near the transmitter, neither does FM broadcast.

As I said try listening to Five Live after dark then if you are cognisant with radio signals post darkness you will realize that the quality of the reception is very very poor, but if you prefer inferior quality, well.....

As for requiring an aerial to listen to DAB I again suggest you check on the quality of the DAB set. I live many many miles from my transmitter but get crystal clear reception (on all stations) without the requirement for the aerial to be extended. Unlike FM which require an aerial at all times, unless you live underneath the FM transmitter.

But as has been said this isn't a geeky techie forum :)

I read this forum because it does contain some useful information. However, Martin Lewis often operates on the "this is cheaper than it was so grab it now" principle.

As Sybil said in Fawlty Towers "the reason he is cheap is because he is no bloody good"

Bargains are there to be had, but to operate on the criteria of price alone is likely to result in many more turkeys than gems.

DAB does offer an excellent range of stations to choose from, but in most areas it is nowhere near as good as FM quality (and you do not need to spend thousands on an audio to find that out)

I returned two of these to Argos as they seem to have a fundamental problem or two. Argos say you need Win XP sp2 but you can tranfer music with older operating systems. You can only charge the internal battery via a USB port on a PC unless you buy a mains adapter with a 5V USB out port on it.

Both models I tried wouldn't store some station presets having followed the instructions to the letter dozens of times. The unit showed signal strengh of some local stations as 0 yet displayed graphical test such as rthe record being played. When I scanned them on a manual search they showed max strength and I could hear the music.
When I did a full search or local to try and search for the full range of stations, the strength went down to zero and no music was played.
The Graphical Eq on the mp3 player muted the already low volume even more for some of he presets and the display was very poor. Greyish white text on a grey background.
Philips normally make good products but having tried two duffers I lost faith and asked for a refund.

Yes this will be an instore price.

To add to the list I got this DAB radio from Argos for £24.99 instead of £59.99 - less than half price
